Reintroducción
Bienvenidos a los nuevos lectores de Padre Migrante. A medida que pasa el tiempo, escribiendo una columna sobre migración, empiezo a asumir que cada lector llega a esta página con interés y comprensión del ministerio migrante basado en la experiencia de los inmigrantes como vecinos, amigos, compañeros de trabajo y compañeros de clase. Llevo más de dos años escribiendo este blog. Sé que he repetido algunas de mis historias y mi mensaje puede ser repetitivo. También reconozco que como he viajado mucho en mis años de ministrar con inmigrantes, algunas situaciones rara vez cambian, otras cambian lentamente y, a veces, hay momentos de intensa pasión y desafío.
Hace unos días, estaba en la radio con la oficina de misiones de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago y estoy seguro de que muchos de los que escucharon ese programa fue la primera vez que me escucharon. Parece que recientemente he estado en varias situaciones reuniéndome con personas que atienden a migrantes en ambos lados de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. A todas las personas que empiezan a interesarse por estos blogs, bienvenidos.
Cuando comencé este blog, tenía la intención de presentarles a las personas del mundo que buscan una vida mejor alejándose de su lugar o país de origen en busca de una vida que sea más segura, vivificante y esperanzadora que donde la gente comenzó. La migración es un fenómeno mundial que se está produciendo a una escala que desafía todos los aspectos de la vida humana actual. El Papa Benedicto XVI lo llamó, “un fenómeno social de proporciones históricas”.Dijo que “requiere una fuerte y clarividente política de cooperación internacional para afrontarlo debidamente”. (Caritas in Veritate. 62, junio 2009)
La migración no es un problema político para resolver. Es una realidad cambiante y desafiante para toda la humanidad. Cada institución, cada industria, cada escuela, cada religión, cada iglesia y cada persona viva se ve afectada por la movilidad humana en la actualidad. Lamentablemente, la sociedad experimenta muchos inconvenientes causados por el movimiento de ciertos grupos. Se presta poca atención al movimiento de personas con medios y oportunidad de moverse. Celebra la oportunidad de ver el mundo y todas las cosas hermosas que suceden en lugares exóticos. Celebra los deportes, las oportunidades de entretenimiento y los avances de la ciencia y la tecnología. La gente se muda a comunidades de tranquilidad y descanso. Disfrutamos de los servicios de personas que brindan oportunidades de educación, hospitalidad y lugares para reunirse con amigos.
Sin embargo, cuando vemos el sufrimiento de las personas cuyas vidas se ven interrumpidas por la guerra, los huracanes, los terremotos, la persecución, el genocidio y los gobiernos incapaces de controlar las pandillas y el crimen organizado, la migración se convierte en un problema. El movimiento de personas que se alejan de las crisis del mundo ejerce una gran presión sobre todas las naciones. No existen respuestas fáciles a los desafíos que enfrentan los migrantes en sus lugares de origen o en los destinos que buscan. Como dijo el Papa Benedicto, es un desafío para todas las naciones. Necesitamos comenzar por comprender, respetar y tratar al migrante como nuestro prójimo, hermano y hermana.
Bienvenidos a los nuevos lectores. Espero que reciban a los migrantes con un reconocimiento de la bondad que he visto en tantos sobrevivientes de la desesperación. No solo están en nuestra frontera, sino en muchas fronteras en todo el mundo. Algunos, por la gracia de Dios, han llegado a países y comunidades que los reciben bien. Muchos tienen un largo camino por recorrer para sentirse como en casa. Muchos más todavía están en camino. ¿Cómo vamos a ver a Cristo en el extranjero?

Welcome to new readers of Padre Migrante. As time passes, writing a column on migration, I begin to assume every reader comes to this page with an interest and understanding of migrant ministry based on experience of immigrants as their neighbors, friends, coworkers, and classmates. I have been writing this blog now for over two years. I know that I have repeated some of my stories, and my message can be repetitive. I also recognize that as I have traveled much in my years ministering with migrants, some situations seldom change, others change slowly, and sometimes there are times of intense passion and challenge.
A few days ago, I was on radio with the mission office of the Archdiocese of Chicago and I am certain that many who heard that program was the first time they may have heard me. It seems that recently, I have been in several situations meeting people serving migrants on both sides of the United States / Mexico border. To all of the people beginning to take interest in these blogs, Welcome.
When I began this blog, it was intended to introduce people to people of the world seeking a better life by moving away from their place or country of origin in search of a life that is more secure, life giving and hopeful than where people began. Migration is a world phenomenon that is taking place on a scale that is challenging every part of human life today. Pope Benedict XVI called it, “a social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions.” He said that it “requires bold, forward looking policies of international cooperation if it is to be handled correctly.” (Caritas in Veritate. 62, June 2009)
Migration is not a political problem to be solved. It is a reality changing and challenging all of humanity. Every institution, every industry, every school, every religion, every church, and every person alive is affected by human mobility today. Sadly, society experiences many inconveniences caused by the movement of certain groups. It pays little attention to the movement of people with means and opportunity to move. It celebrates the opportunity to see the world and all the beautiful things taking place in exotic places. It celebrates the sports, entertainment opportunities, and the advances of science and technology. People move to communities of ease and rest. We enjoy the services of people providing opportunities for education, hospitality and places to meet with friends.
Yet, when we see the suffering of people whose lives are disrupted by war, hurricanes, earthquakes, persecution, genocide and governments unable to control gangs and organized crime, migration becomes a problem. The movement of people away from the crises of the world places great pressure on all nations. There are no easy answers to the challenges that migrants face in their places of origin or in the destinations that they seek. As Pope Benedict said, it is a challenge for all nations. We need to begin by understanding, respecting, and treating the migrant as our neighbor, brother and sister.
Welcome to new readers. I hope that you welcome migrants with a recognition of the goodness that I have seen in so many survivors of desperation. They are not only on our border, but many borders throughout the world. Some, by the grace of God have made it to countries and communities receiving them well. Many have a long way to go to feeling at home. Many are still are on the migrant trail. How will we receive Christ, the migrant?

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
