Dia de los Muertos
Esta noche celebraré una Misa tradicional por el “Día de los Muertos”. Hay muchas costumbres sobre esta fiesta que han capturado la imaginación de mucha gente, pero a menudo las costumbres parecen misteriosas para muchos estadounidenses. Es el día para recordar a nuestros seres queridos que han muerto. En muchos hogares habrá un altar o una pequeña exhibición en los hogares para que la familia honre a quienes los precedieron. Es una exhibición colorida, con símbolos que se usan para enseñar a los miembros de la familia sobre sus seres queridos en el pasado.
Cuando estuvimos en una parroquia en Liberal, Kansas, identificamos catorce barrios en el pueblo. Invitamos a gente de cada barrio a construir un altar en nuestro gimnasio. Cada uno honró a los que habían fallecido de familias en su barrio. Las personas colocaron fotos de sus seres queridos, con recordatorios de su vida en sus comidas favoritas, ropa, herramientas de trabajo, rosarios o recordatorios de fe e incluso recordatorios de su bebida favorita, incluyendo alcohol. El grupo de jóvenes hizo un altar para recordar las muertes de jóvenes en el pueblo. Alrededor de los altares había calaveras de azúcar. Mostramos los altares el fin de semana anterior al Día de los Muertos.
Después de la misa de un domingo, la gente recorrió el gimnasio para ver los diferentes altares. Una pareja no hispana vio las calaveras y preguntó: “¿Qué son estas? ¿Son vudú?”. Francisco dijo: “No, no. Las calaveras de azucar son nuestra forma de reírnos de la muerte. Es nuestra profesión de fe en la resurrección”. Para muchas familias, este es un día para contarles a sus hijos acerca de sus abuelos y familiares que los niños tal vez no conozcan o recuerden. Siempre es un día para honrar y celebrar la vida de nuestros seres queridos.

Day of the Dead
Tonight, I will celebrate a traditional Mass for “Día de los Muertos.” There are many customs about this feast that has captured the imagination of many people in our country, but often the customs seem mysterious for many Americans. It is the day to remember our loved ones who have died. In many homes there will be an altar or small display in the homes for the family to honor those who have gone before them. It is a colorful display, with symbols used to teach the family members about loved ones in their past.
When we were at a parish in Liberal, Kansas, we identified fourteen barrios in the town. We invited people of each barrio to build an altar in our gym. Each honored those who had passed from families in their barrio. People placed photos of loved ones, with reminders of their lives in their favorite foods, clothes, work tools, rosaries or reminders of faith and even reminders of their favorite beverage, including alcohol. The youth group made an altar to remember the deaths of youth in the town. Around the altars there were sugar skulls. We displayed the altars on the weekend before All Souls Day.
After Mass one Sunday, people toured the gym to see the different altars. A non-hispanic couple saw the skulls and asked, “What are these? Are they voo-doo?” Francisco said, “No, no. The candy skulls are our way of laughing at death. It is our profession of belief in the resurrection.” For many families, this is a day to tell their children about their grandparents and relatives that the children may not know or remember. It is always a day to honor and celebrate the lives of our loved ones.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
