The faith of the poor / La fe de los pobres

The faith of the poor

Pope Francis says, “the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” I wrote “Migrant Faith” to call attention to the faith of migrants. I also recognized that often the poor are denied access to the sacraments. Since writing the book, I have told many of the stories of people who, when given an opportunity to participate in the life of the Church, have become very active in the life of the Church.

My hope in writing a sequel to “Migrant Faith”, people may recognize the faith of the poor in their communities. The stories of faith that has touched my life, come from migrant and immigrant people who have come from all over the world. Their witness often arises from carrying the cross in their lives, but also from the great joy of the hope that survives many hardships.

As I tell stories of people who inspire me, I encourage readers to write to me at padremigrante@gmail.com, to tell me your stories of the faith of migrants.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
