Hambre y sed de justicia
“Felices los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque serán saciados”. (Mt 5,6)
Hace treinta años, un agente del INS tocó a la puerta de Miguel e Irma (nombres cambiados). Miguel estaba en el trabajo. El agente le preguntó a Irma si estaba documentada. Ella dijo que no.” El agente le dijo que fuera a su oficina con su esposo a la mañana siguiente. Me pidieron que fuera con ellos. A la mañana siguiente, el agente les informó que podían salir voluntariamente del país dentro de los treinta días o solicitar la suspensión de deportación. Me dijo: “Padre, parecen ser buenas personas. Ayúdelos a encontrar un abogado para apelar su caso”.
El Papa Francisco declara en su mensaje: la justicia “debe edificarse con paciencia, sacrificio y determinación, para que todos los que tienen hambre y sed de ella sean saciados”. (p. 3) Para mí, la parte más difícil de su mensaje es la “paciencia”. El 6 de enero de 1993, Miguel e Irma ganaron su caso de inmigración y recibieron la residencia permanente en los Estados Unidos. La alegría de esa victoria me introdujo al proceso de inmigración. Estaba lista para el sacrificio y la determinación, para trabajar para “que se eliminen las múltiples formas de desigualdad y discriminación en el mundo actual”. Yo tenía expectación de más victorias, pero los últimos treinta años probaron mi paciencia, más que mi compromiso.
Para no desanimarnos, recordemos que el Papa Pablo VI dijo el 1 de enero de 1972: “Si quiere la paz, trabaja por la justicia”. Nuestra sed de justicia necesita nuestra participación. Que la justicia se construya con nuestra paciencia, sacrificio y compromiso.

Hunger and thirst for righteousness
“Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” (Mt 5:6)
Thirty years ago, an INS agent knocked on the door of Miguel and Irma (names changed). Miguel was at work. The agent asked Irma if she was documented. She said, “No.” The agent told her to come to his office with her husband the next morning. They asked me to go with them. The next morning, the agent informed them that they could voluntarily leave the country within thirty days or request a suspension of deportation hearing. He told me, “Father, they appear to be good people. Help them find a lawyer to appeal their case.”
Pope Francis declares in his message: “Justice needs to be built up with patience, sacrifice, and determination, so that all those who hunger and thirst for it may be satisfied.” (p. 3) For me, the hardest part of his message is “patience”. On January 6, 1993, Miguel and Irma won their immigration case and received permanent residence in the United States. The joy of that victory introduced me to the immigration process. I was ready for the sacrifice and the determination, to work so “that the many forms of inequality and discrimination in the present world may be eliminated.” Yet, with one victory, I expected more to follow. The past thirty years have tested my patience much more than my commitment.
Lest we get discouraged, let us remember Pope Paul VI saying on January 1, 1972, “If you want peace, work for justice.” Our thirst for justice needs our participation. Let justice be built through our patience, sacrifice and commitment.

Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
