Sobre ser Redentorista
Hoy es la fiesta de San Alfonso de Ligorio. En 1968 profesé mis votos como Redentorista. Era en la fiesta de San Alfonso, pero en ese momento se celebraba el 2 de agosto. Un par de años después, la fiesta se trasladó al 1 de agosto. Crecí en una parroquia redentorista y cuando experimenté un interés por la vocación religiosa. No conocía ninguna otra congregación. A medida que aprendía más sobre San Alfonso y los Redentoristas, quise servir a los más necesitados.
Yo era en el mejor de los casos un estudiante ‘ordinario’. Luché con el latín y reprobé el español. Quería ir a misiones extranjeros, pero con mis dificultades con los idiomas, cuando nos ordenaron, dos de mis compañeros fueron a Brasil y yo fui a Wichita, Kansas. San Alfonso instituyó a los Redentoristas para servir a los “más abandonados”. Mis primeras asignaciones siempre me requerían trabajar con jóvenes. También trabajé mucho con alcohólicos y sus familias. Después de diez años en las parroquias, me asignaron como promotor de vocaciones. Como promotor de vocaciones, mientras les decía a los jóvenes que estábamos llamados a servir a los más abandonados, quería la oportunidad de dedicarme a los marginados de la Iglesia.
Al final de mi tiempo promoviendo vocaciones, nuestro Superior General pidió que cada provincia dedicara una comunidad para acoger a los jóvenes en nuestra vida y ministerio. Con otros dos Redentoristas, comenzamos la Casa San Alfonso en Denver, una casa de acogida para los jóvenes de un barrio pobre. En la casa San Alfonso, pronto fue obvio que tenía que aprender español. San Alfonso dijo una vez que sus mayores maestros en moralidad fueron los pobres, quienes le mostraron el sentido de la vida moral. En Casa San Alfonso, los jóvenes me mostraron la dignidad, la fe, la esperanza y la alegría de las personas al margen de la Iglesia.
Después de cinco años en Casa San Alfonso, he sido bendecido al caminar con jóvenes hispanos, migrantes, inmigrantes y muchos otros mostrándome la fe de los pobres. Los ideales y sueños de San Alfonso eran abstractos cuando estudié su vida como seminarista. Se hicieron realidad mientras caminaba con jóvenes hispanos, trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes, trabajadores de empacadoras en Kansas y muchas personas que asistían a misiones parroquiales en quince estados.
El carisma de San Alfonso siempre me inspiró a buscar trabajo con personas en los márgenes de la iglesia. Como el Papa Francisco nos llama a nunca olvidar nuestro carisma redentorista para buscar a las personas de la periferia, espero que nuestra congregación tenga el coraje y el compromiso necesarios para ofrecernos al cuidado de los migrantes. On being a Redemptorist
Today is the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori. In 1968, I professed my vows as a Redemptorist. It was on the feast of St. Alphonsus, but at that time it was celebrated on August 2. A couple years later the feast was moved to August 1. I grew up in a Redemptorist parish and when I experienced an interest in religious vocation. I did not know of any other congregation. As I learned more about St. Alphonsus and the Redemptorists, I wanted to serve those most in need.
I was at best an ‘ordinary’ student. I struggled with Latin and flunked Spanish. I wanted to go on foreign missions, but with my struggles with languages, when we were ordained, two of my classmates went to Brazil and I went to Wichita, Kansas. As Redemptorists we reflected often on St. Alphonsus’ desire that we seek out the “most abandoned”. My first assignments always called on me to work with youth. I also worked a great deal with alcoholics and their families. After ten years in parishes, I was assigned as vocation director. During the years as vocation director, as I told young men that we were called to serve the most abandoned, I wanted the opportunity to dedicate myself to people on the fringes of the Church.
At the end of my time as vocation director, our Superior General called for each province to dedicate one community to welcome young people to our lives and ministry. With two other Redemptorists, we began Casa San Alfonso in Denver as a house of welcome for inner city youth. At our youth house, it soon was obvious that I had to learn Spanish. St. Alphonsus once said that his greatest teachers in morality were the poor, who showed him the meaning of moral life. In Casa San Alfonso, I had the best of teachers showing me the dignity, faith, hope and joy of people on the margins of the Church.
After five years at Casa San Alfonso, I have been blessed in walking with Hispanic youth, migrants, immigrants, and many others showing me the faith of the poor. The ideals and dreams of Alphonsus were abstract when I studied his life as a seminarian. They became reality as I walked with Hispanic young people, migrant farm workers, packing house workers in Kansas and many people attending parish missions in fifteen states.
The charism of St. Alphonsus always inspired me to seek out work with people on the margins of the church. As Pope Francis calls us to never forget our Redemptorist charism to seek out people on the periphery, I hope that our congregation has the courage and commitment needed to offer ourselves to the care of migrants. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
