Primero, considero a mi familia.

Today, I have to recognize my age. Turning 75, I thank so many people who make my life good. First, I consider my family. There is a saying, “If you want happiness, choose your parents well.” I must have chosen well, because my parents gave me a great introduction to life. They may not appear to have been perfect to others, but I assure you that my brothers and sisters will agree that we chose our parents well.

Our parents chose to make our home in Holy Name Parish in Omaha. Our parish slogan was, “Holy Name, a great place to live.” We grew up in the shadow of the Redemptorist rectory. I do not know if I chose to become a Redemptorist, or God chose me to be a Redemptorist before I ever knew it. Holy Name was our church, our school and our playground. Sundays began with Mass, and then gathering with the family. We often went to the homes of grandparents on each side of the family, or to parks, swimming holes or Uncle Red’s farm. Faith and family filled our Sundays. The church and school yard were our playground. Everything in life revolved around Holy Name and family. Faith and family guided us.

Considering 75 years of life, 54 years as a Redemptorist, 49 years as a priest and over thirty years living and working with migrants and immigrants, today, I thank God for everyone who has made my life good. As I look back on life, there were some tough times and disappointments, but it is not worth it, to dwell on those few moments. There are so many blessings that one takes for granted. There are blessings of health, family, and community, but some of the greatest blessings are recovering from our weaknesses and faults. I began with the saying ¨the secret to a happy life is choosing your parents well.” I say today, “Thank you God for choosing my parents well” and I thank God for all who have blessed my life over these years.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
