Nuestra misión no es política
Jesús le preguntó a Pedro tres veces si lo amaba. Puede haber sido frustrante para Pedro. Seguramente le recordó las tres veces que negó conocer a Jesús. Cada vez que Pedro respondió, Jesús dijo: “Apacienta mis corderos… Pastorea mis ovejas… Apacienta mis ovejas…”. Jesús no pidió esto tres veces para avergonzar a Pedro por sus negaciones, sino para dejar clara su misión: “Apacienta mis ovejas”. Nosotros Redentoristas queremos ofrecer atención espiritual a los migrantes, no estamos tratando de abordar problemas políticos. Las figuras políticas de todas las naciones del mundo ven la migración de personas como un problema a resolver. Los Redentoristas ven a los inmigrantes como nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Representan a Jesús para nosotros mientras luchan por sobrevivir en un mundo dividido. Nuestra misión es servirles, sin importar de dónde sean, por qué dejaron su país de origen o a qué religión pertenezcan. Nuestra misión es servir a las personas en la periferia.
Desde que comenzamos este sitio web, es bueno ver cuántas personas siguen el sitio, pero me entristece ver cuántos en sus preguntas consideran la inmigración únicamente a través de una lente política. Nuestra misión no está involucrada en la política de migración. Temer a las personas que tienen pocos recursos, cuya motivación para migrar surge de la opresión, la violencia, las guerras y los desastres naturales, es una tontería y una crueldad.
Nuestra misión es ofrecer cuidado pastoral, a aquellos que sufren insulto a su dignidad, pérdida del respeto por sí mismos, pérdida del respeto por los demás y falta confianza en el amor de Dios. Con demasiada frecuencia, el migrante se encuentra aislado en la sociedad, necesitando a alguien que le testifique el amor de Dios. No solo deseamos dar la bienvenida al migrante, sino que deseamos apoyar a los proveedores de servicios de los migrantes. Muchos de los que ofrecen servicios sociales, legales y de salud a los migrantes son testigos del tremendo sufrimiento de los migrantes y se encuentran con políticos y personas mal informadas que los insultan por su servicio a los migrantes.
Nuestra misión no está involucrada en los asuntos de política y aplicación de la ley de inmigración. Muy pocas personas están interesadas en conocer las esperanzas, los sueños, las penas, la desesperación de las personas que buscan la vida fuera de la nación de su nacimiento. Es muy ofensivo cuando la gente actúa como si la mayoría de los inmigrantes fueran fraudes, manipuladores y delincuentes. Eso simplemente no es cierto. Muchos son simplemente víctimas de gobiernos fallidos, violencia, persecución y victimas de desastres naturales. Un migrante entra en un curso de vida peligroso, incierto, solitario y carente de derechos humanos. Nuestra preocupación por el cuidado pastoral que necesitan las personas involucradas en la crisis migratoria mundial incluye a los migrantes ya los cuidadores.
Ojalá las personas que sigan estas páginas reconozcan a los migrantes, no como enemigos o un peligro, sino como Pueblo de Dios en el mismo camino que todos recorremos. Jesús les dijo a los Apóstoles que lo vieran en el extraño. Cuando damos la bienvenida al extraño, le damos la bienvenida. Cuando alimentamos al hambriento, lo alimentamos a él. Cuando amamos al extraño, lo amamos.

Our mission is not political
Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. It may have been frustrating for Peter. It surely reminded him of the three times that he denied knowing Jesus. Each time after Peter responded, Jesus said, “Feed my lambs…Tend my sheep…Feed my sheep.” Jesus did not ask this three times to embarrass Peter about his denials, but to make clear his mission, “Feed my sheep.” As Redemptorists seek to offer spiritual care to migrants, we are not seeking to address political problems. Political figures in all nations of the world view the migration of people as a problem to be solved. Redemptorists see the migrants as our brothers and sisters. They represent Jesus to us as they struggle to survive in a divided world. Our mission is to serve them, no matter where they are from, why they left their country of origin or to what religion they belong. Our mission is to serve people on the periphery.
Since we began this website, it is good to see how many people are following the site, but I am saddened by how many in their questions view immigration solely through a political lens. Our mission is not engaged in the politics of migration. Fearing people who have few resources, whose motivation to migrate arises from oppression, violence, wars and natural disasters is foolish and cruel.
Our mission is to offer pastoral care, to those who suffer insult to their dignity, loss of self-respect, loss of respect for others and confidence that they are loved by God. Too often, the migrant finds themselves out of place in society, needing someone to witness to them the love of God. Not only do we wish to welcome the migrant, but we wish to support the service providers of migrants. Many offering health, legal and social service to migrants witness tremendous suffering of the migrants and find politicians and people who are misinformed insulting them for their service of migrants.
To the political issues and assumptions that people refer to, our mission is not engaged in the issues of politics and immigration enforcement. Very few people are interested in learning about the hopes, the dreams, the sorrows, the desperation of people who seek life outside the nation of their birth. It is very offensive when people act as though most migrants are frauds, manipulators and criminals. That is simply not true. Many are simply the victims of failed governments, violence, persecution and devastating natural disasters. A migrant enters a course of life that is dangerous, uncertain, lonely and lacking human rights. Our concern for pastoral care needed by people involved in the world’s migrant crisis includes the migrants and the care givers.
Hopefully, people following these pages recognize the migrants, not as enemies or a danger, but recognize them as People of God on the same journey that all of us travel. Jesus told the Apostles to see him in the stranger. When we welcome the stranger, we welcome him. When we feed the hungry, we feed him. When we love the stranger, we love him.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo.
