Tratar a las mujeres con dignidad
El domingo leemos el Evangelio de Juan, 8:1-11. Los fariseos querían atrapar a Jesús. Lo hicieron avergonzada y condenada a una mujer sorprendida en adulterio. Es fácil considerar la misericordia de Jesús cuando dijo: “Ni yo te condeno”. En el Evangelio de Juan, después de que los fariseos se fueran con las piedras en la mano, Jesús vuelve a hablar con los fariseos.
Lo desafían en su autoridad para enseñar como lo hizo. Él dijo: “Ustedes juzguen por las apariencias, yo no juzgo a nadie”. Hubiera sido fácil para él decir: “No juzgo por las apariencias”. La declaración, “Yo no juzgo a nadie”, enfatiza una vez más cuán diferente es Jesús de los líderes judíos.
¿Apreciamos sus palabras para nosotros, “No juzguen”? En lugar de juzgar y mostrarle a la gente sus faltas, hay mucho valor en tratar a las personas con gracia y respeto. Las personas necesitan conocer su propia dignidad y su relación con los demás. Un joven de nuestra casa de jóvenes, Casa San Alfonso, dijo que lo que aprendió en la Casa fue el respeto por sí mismo, el respeto por los demás y la responsabilidad.
Una mujer que era huésped frecuente de nuestra casa de jóvenes dijo que venía a la Casa porque allí la trataban con respeto. Ella dijo: “Aquí, nadie me pide que haga lo que no quiero hacer”. Su comentario sobre los jóvenes de nuestra comunidad me hizo sentir orgulloso de los muchachos por tratar a las mujeres con dignidad. Eso es vivir a la semejanza de Jesús.

Treating women with dignity
On Sunday, we read the Gospel of John, 8:1-11. The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus. They did so by shaming and condemning a woman caught in adultery. It is easy to consider the mercy of Jesus as he said, “Nor do I condemn you.” In the Gospel of John, after the Pharisees left with the rocks in their hands, Jesus once again is speaking with the Pharisees.
They challenge him on his authority to teach as he did. He said, “You judge by appearances, I do not judge anyone.” It would have been easy for him to say, “I do not judge by appearances.” The statement, “I do not judge anyone”, emphasizes once again how different Jesus is from the Jewish leaders.
Do we appreciate his words to us, “Do not judge”? Instead of judging and showing people their faults, there is so much value in treating people with grace and respect. People need to know their own dignity, and their relationship with others. One young man at our youth house, Casa San Alfonso said that what he learned at the Casa was respect for himself, respect for others and responsibility.
A woman who was a frequent guest at our youth house said that she came to the Casa because there she was treated with respect. She said, “Here, no one asks me to do what I do not want to do.” Her comment about the young men of our youth community made me proud of the guys for treating women with dignity. That is living in the likeness of Jesus.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
