Un misionero inquieto
Estoy feliz de que otros valoren mis años de experiencia con personas migrantes. He trabajado por más de treinta años en el ministerio hispano, en una amplia variedad de situaciones. He trabajado en el ministerio juvenil, predicando misiones y retiros, iniciando el ministerio hispano en parroquias sin antecedentes de ministerio hispano, organizando programas de catequesis para trabajadores de temporada, celebrando misas en prisiones, testificando en tribunales de inmigración, administración temporal de parroquias para que los sacerdotes puedan salir a estudiar o tener un sabático, y mucho más. Me he mudado tantas veces y he trabajado en condiciones que me valieron el nombre de Padre Migrante.
La iniciativa apostólica redentorista entre las Provincias de Denver y México es una oportunidad rara. La mayor parte de mi trabajo anterior implicó mi propia iniciativa. Mientras entré en otras iniciativas, estas iniciativas se iniciaron de otros. Ahora estoy pedido a participar en el discernimiento sobre a quiénes queremos servir, qué esperamos hacer, los métodos de evangelización y formación de una comunidad redentorista para servir en el ministerio. La misión depende en cada uno de nosotros, y juntos caminaremos con el pueblo migrante.
Las palabras de un trabajador agrícola migrante hace veinticinco años nos desafían a recordar que nuestro primer trabajo es invitar a la gente experimente el amor de Dios. Le pregunté a esta mujer: “Si vuelvo a estar con ustedes el próximo verano, ¿qué puedo hacer más que ofrecer Misa en los campamentos?” Ella dijo: “No necesitamos que seas nuestro médico, abogado o trabajador social. Necesitamos que seas nuestro sacerdote”. Ella dijo que muchos trabajadores de la iglesia brindan alimentos, refugio y medicinas para los trabajadores, pero lo que necesitan es la recepción de los sacramentos para sus hijos. Sé nuestro sacerdote.
En el discernimiento, estoy seguro de que estaremos respondiendo a las necesidades de alimentos, vivienda y acceso a asesoramiento legal, pero lo más importante se extenderá más allá de la ayuda en caso de crisis. Los migrantes permanecen en circunstancias difíciles durante meses e incluso años. Necesitan a alguien que les lleve la ‘buena nueva’ y el cuidado pastoral.
Estoy ansioso por comenzar esta misión. Soy responsable de una parroquia desde ahora hasta el domingo de Pascua, y estoy ansiosa por ir a México y descubrir los planes de otros mientras comenzamos un proceso de preparación para un nuevo ministerio.

A restless missionary
I am happy that others value my years of experience with migrant people. I have worked for over thirty years in Hispanic ministry, in a wide variety of situations. I have worked in youth ministry, preaching missions and retreats, starting Hispanic ministry in parishes with no history of Hispanic ministry, organizing catechetical programs for seasonal workers, celebrating masses in prisons, testifying in immigration court cases, temporary administration of parishes so that priests may go away for study or a sabbatical, and much more. I have moved so often and worked in conditions that earn me the name, Padre Migrante.
The Redemptorist apostolic initiative between the Denver and Mexico City Provinces is a rare opportunity. Most of my previous work involved my own personal initiative. While I entered other initiatives, those initiatives were begun by others. I am now asked to participate in the discernment of whom we seek to serve, what we hope to do, methods of evangelization and formation of a Redemptorist community to serve in the ministry. The mission depends on each one of us, and together we seek to walk with migrant people.
The words of a migrant farmworker twenty-five years ago challenge us to remember that our first work is to let people experience the love of God. I asked a migrant woman, “If I return to be with you next summer, what can I do more than offer Mass in the migrant camps?” She said, “We do not need you to be our doctor, lawyer or social worker. We need you to be our priest.” She said that many church workers provide food, shelter and medicine for the workers, but what they need is reception of sacraments for their children. Be our priest.
In our discernment, I am certain that we will be responding to needs of food, shelter and access to legal council, but most important extend beyond crisis aid. Migrants remain in challenging circumstances for months and even years. They need someone to bring them the `good news’ and pastoral care.
I am anxious to get started on this mission. I am responsible for a parish from now until Easter Sunday, and am eager to go to Mexico and discover the plans of others as we begin a process to prepare for a new ministry.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
