Más allá
Yavé dijo a Abram: “Deja tu país, a los de tu raza y a la familia de tu padre, y anda a la tierra que yo te mostraré. Haré de ti una gran nación y te bendeciré; voy a engrandecer tu nombre, y tú serás una bendición.” (Gén. 12:1-2)
Recordamos la imagen de Abraham saliendo de Ur de Caldea para ir a una “Tierra Prometida” que el Señor le mostraría. Dejó la tierra de su nacimiento. Fue a un viaje que lo llevó desde el valle fértil de los ríos Tigris y Éufrates, pasando por desiertos y montañas para llegar a lo que hoy es Israel. Se arriesgó no solo por sí mismo, sino también por su esposa y sus compañeros. Empezó su camino con confianza en Dios. No dependía de sus propias fuerzas sino de las de Dios.
El Papa Francisco habla de ir más allá de nosotros mismos, para entrar en relaciones no solo con aquellos que están cerca de nosotros, sino también fuera de nuestras familias y vecinos. “Nuestra relación, si es sana y verdadera, nos abre a los otros que nos amplían y enriquecen.” (FT. 89) Abraham hizo amigos en su viaje, enfrentó peligros y utilizó la astucia para proteger a su esposa cuando fue necesario, recibió a hombres santos como visitantes, entró en la tierra de Canaán y Sara dio a luz a un hijo, Isaac. Los demás en su vida cumplieron la promesa del Señor, su nombre se hizo grande y es una bendición para todos los que se mueven fuera de sí mismos en la fe.
“El amor que es auténtico, que ayuda a crecer, y las formas más nobles de la amistad, residen en corazones que se dejan completar.” (FT. 89)
Como misionera redentorista, curando el sitio web del Padre Migrante, ha sido una bendición encontrarme con muchos ‘Abraham’ en mi vida, personas que han arriesgado todo en la vida para buscar una vida mejor. A medida que el mundo experimente la migración de personas que dejan las naciones no por elección, sino en respuesta a un grave peligro, que todos los corazones estén abiertos a esos extraños que ingresan a nuestras comunidades. En lugar del miedo, que desarrollemos confianza en la bondad de los pobres y los oprimidos del mundo.

Moving beyond ourselves
“The LORD said to Abram: Go forth from your land, your relatives, and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” (Gen. 12:1-2)
We recall the image of Abraham leaving Ur of Chaldea to go to a “Promised Land” that the Lord would show him. He left the land of his birth. It was a journey that took him from the fertile valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, passing through deserts and mountains to arrive in what is now Israel. He took risks not only for himself, but for his wife and his companions. He began his journey with trust in God. He did not depend on his own strength but on God’s.
Pope Francis speaks of moving beyond ourselves, to enter relationships not only with those who are close to us, but outside our families and neighbors. “Our relationships, if healthy and authentic, open us to others who expand and enrich us.” (FT. 89) Abraham made friends on his journey, encountered dangers and used guile to protect his wife when necessary, welcomed holy men as visitors, entered the land of Canaan and Sara gave birth to a son, Isaac. The others in his life fulfilled the promise of the Lord, and his name became great and he is a blessing to all who move outside themselves in faith.
“Authentic and mature love and true friendship can only take root in hearts open to growth through relationships with others.” (FT. 89)
As a Redemptorist missionary, curating the Padre Migrante website, it has been my blessing to encounter many ‘Abrahams’ in my life, people who have risked everything in life to seek a better life. As the world experiences migration of people leaving nations not by choice, but in response to grave danger, may all hearts be open to those strangers entering our communities. Rather than fear or others, may we develop confidence in the goodness of the poor and the oppressed of the world.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
