Lectura espiritual para la Cuaresma, “Fratelli Tutti”
Que nuestros lectores ofrezcan oración y ayuno por la paz en Ucrania el Miércoles de Ceniza. Hace unos días, sugerí leer “Fratelli Tutti” durante la Cuaresma. El Papa Francisco presenta la encíclica considerando que San Francisco de Asís se dirige a todos como hermano y hermana. Fue el “amor, la sencillez y la alegría” fraterno de San Francisco (FT. 2) lo que lo inspiró a escribir la encíclica “Laudato Si”. Él le da crédito a San Francisco llamando a todas las personas hermanos y hermanas, no simplemente a las personas cercanas a él. Vio a los pobres, los abandonados, los enfermos, los marginados, los sarracenos y los musulmanes como hermanos y hermanas. En este momento peligroso para nuestro mundo, debemos recordar que todos somos “Fratelli Tutti / Todos los hermanos y hermanas”.
El Papa Francisco explica que escribió esta carta cuando comenzó la pandemia de Covid-19. Aquí explica sus razones para escribir “Fratelli Tutti”.
- Asimismo, cuando estaba redactando esta carta, irrumpió de manera inesperada la pandemia de Covid-19 que dejó al descubierto nuestras falsas seguridades. Más allá de las diversas respuestas que dieron los distintos países, se evidenció la incapacidad de actuar conjuntamente. A pesar de estar hiperconectados, existía una fragmentación que volvía más difícil resolver los problemas que nos afectan a todos. Si alguien cree que sólo se trataba de hacer funcionar mejor lo que ya hacíamos, o que el único mensaje es que debemos mejorar los sistemas y las reglas ya existentes, está negando la realidad.
- Anhelo que en esta época que nos toca vivir, reconociendo la dignidad de cada persona humana, podamos hacer renacer entre todos un deseo mundial de hermandad. Entre todos: «He ahí un hermoso secreto para soñar y hacer de nuestra vida una hermosa aventura. Nadie puede pelear la vida aisladamente. […] Se necesita una comunidad que nos sostenga, que nos ayude y en la que nos ayudemos unos a otros a mirar hacia delante. ¡Qué importante es soñar juntos! […] Solos se corre el riesgo de tener espejismos, en los que ves lo que no hay; los sueños se construyen juntos»[6]. Soñemos como una única humanidad, como caminantes de la misma carne humana, como hijos de esta misma tierra que nos cobija a todos, cada uno con la riqueza de su fe o de sus convicciones, cada uno con su propia voz, todos hermanos.
Entonces, durante nuestra jornada de Cuaresma, que podamos ‘soñar juntos’, orar y trabajar por la paz.

May our readers offer prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine on Ash Wednesday. A few days ago, I suggested reading “Fratelli Tutti” during Lent. Pope Francis introduces the encyclical considering St. Francis of Assisi addressing everyone as brother and sister. It was the St. Francis’ fraternal “love, simplicity and joy” (FT. 2) that inspired him to write the encyclical, “Laudato Si.” He credits St. Francis’ calling all people brothers and sisters, not simply the people close to him. He saw the poor, the abandoned, the sick, the outcast, the Saracens and Muslim people as brother and sister. At this perilous time for our world, we need to remember that we are all “Fratelli Tutti / All brothers and sisters.”
Pope Francis explains that he wrote this letter as the Covid-19 pandemic began. Here he explains his reasons for writing “Fratelli Tutti.”
- As I was writing this letter, the Covid-19 pandemic unexpectedly erupted, exposing our false securities. Aside from the different ways that various countries responded to the crisis, their inability to work together became quite evident. For all our hyper-connectivity, we witnessed a fragmentation that made it more difficult to resolve problems that affect us all. Anyone who thinks that the only lesson to be learned was the need to improve what we were already doing, or to refine existing systems and regulations, is denying reality.
- It is my desire that, in this our time, by acknowledging the dignity of each human person, we can contribute to the rebirth of a universal aspiration to fraternity. Fraternity between all men and women. “Here we have a splendid secret that shows us how to dream and to turn our life into a wonderful adventure. No one can face life in isolation… We need a community that supports and helps us, in which we can help one another to keep looking ahead. How important it is to dream together… By ourselves, we risk seeing mirages, things that are not there. Dreams, on the other hand, are built together”.[6]Let us dream, then, as a single human family, as fellow travelers sharing the same flesh, as children of the same earth which is our common home, each of us bringing the richness of his or her beliefs and convictions, each of us with his or her own voice, brothers and sisters all.
So during our Lenten journey, may we ‘dream together’, pray and work for peace.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
