Apreciación de la cultura
La apreciación de la cultura es más que simplemente conocer y comprender la cultura. Caminé con inmigrantes y migrantes hispanos durante más de quince años antes de tener la oportunidad de tomarme un año sabático. Cuando se me dio la oportunidad de tomar un año sabático, tuve la libertad de tomarme seis meses para considerar mis años en el ministerio hispano. Caminé con los migrantes como el p. López dijo. Aprendí sobre la historia y la cultura mexicana, pero me di cuenta de que yo era un observador, no un participante de la cultura. Había más de lo que quería. Me faltaba suficiente “apreciación” de la cultura.
La primera parte de mi año sabático fuí a México a visitar a las familias de las personas con las que caminé en Colorado, Kansas y Oregón. La segunda parte fue trabajar en el campo y vivir en campamentos de migrantes. En México, visité mis ‘hogares humildes’. A lo largo de los años, muchos me dijeron que tenía un hogar humilde en Jalisco, Michoacán, Durango, Guerrero y muchos estados de México. Viajé en autobús y me quedé en casas. Visité ranchos, barrios pobres en las afueras de las ciudades grandes, casas en zonas turísticas, pero sobre todo visité comunidades rurales. Visité santuarios, museos, mercados y sitios históricos. Comí tacos en la calle, y caminé. El principal medio de transporte cuando las familias querían presentarme a amigos y familiares era caminar. Mi viaje entre comunidades y estados fue en transporte público. Probé, olí, escuché y toqué la cultura mexicana.
Cuando regresé a los Estados Unidos, obtuve permiso en un huerto para vivir y trabajar con los migrantes recogiendo cerezas. No trabajé por pago, sino que recogí cerezas codo con codo con diferentes familias y trabajadores cada día. Las cerezas que recogí fueron contadas con las de ellos, para que no perdieran sueldo tratando de enseñarle al americano cómo hacer la cosecha. Después de trabajar durante una hora más o menos, me tomé un tiempo para la meditación y la oración, y volví a trabajar el resto del día. Aprecié el frío de la mañana, sabiendo que se acercaba el calor del día. Me regocijé con los demás cuando llegó la lonchera. Disfruté de una bebida al final del día y de la ducha antes de prepararme para la cena, incluso si no había agua caliente. La cultura del campamento solo podía apreciarse viviendo y trabajando con la gente.
Quince años después del año sabático
Ahora, es quince años después de mi año sabático. Me doy cuenta de que todavía estoy aprendiendo sobre la cultura latina. Además, mi aprecio aumenta. Un buen amigo mexicano le dijo: “Padre, usted tiene sangre americana, pero corazón mexicano”. Agradezco su comentario, pero me doy cuenta de que la inmersión en otra cultura siempre es incompleta. Seguir caminando con migrantes e inmigrantes es la alegría más grande de mi vida. Que también crezcan en la apreciación de sus propias culturas y honren las culturas de los demás.

Appreciation of culture
Appreciation of culture is more than simply learning about and even understanding culture. I walked with Hispanic migrants and immigrants for over fifteen years before I had the opportunity to take a sabbatical. When given the opportunity for a sabbatical, I had the freedom to take six months to consider my years in Hispanic ministry. I walked with migrants as Fr. Lopez said. I learned about Mexican history and culture, but I realized that I was an observer, not a participant in the culture. There was more that I wanted. I lacked sufficient “appreciation of the culture.”
The first part of my sabbatical was to go to Mexico to visit the families of people with whom I walked in Colorado, Kansas and Oregon. The second part was to work in the fields and to live in migrant camps. In Mexico, I visited my many ‘humble homes’. Over the years, many told me that I had a humble home in Jalisco, Michoacan, Durango, Guerrero, and many states of Mexico. I traveled by bus and stayed in homes. I visited ranches, poor barrios on the edges of big cities, homes in tourist areas, but most of all, I visited rural communities. I visited shrines, museums, markets, and historical sites. I ate tacos on the street, and walked. The primary means of transportation when families wanted to introduce me to friends and family was to walk. My travel between communities and states was by public transportation. I tasted, smelled, heard and touched Mexican culture.
When I came back to the United States, I gained permission at an orchard to live and work with the migrants picking cherries. I did not work for pay, but picked cherries side by side with different families and workers each day. The cherries that I picked were counted with theirs, so that they did not lose pay trying to teach the American how to do the harvest. After working for an hour or so, I took time for meditation and prayer, and returned to work the rest of the day. I appreciated the chill of the morning, knowing that the heat of the day was coming. I rejoiced with the others when the lunch truck arrived. I enjoyed a beverage at the end of the day, and the shower before preparing for dinner, even if there was no hot water. The culture of the camp could only be appreciated by living and working with the people.
Fifteen years after the sabbatical
Now, it is fifteen years after my sabbatical. I realize that I am still learning about Latino culture. Also, my appreciation increases. A good Mexican friend said, “Padre, you have American blood but a Mexican heart.” I am grateful for his comment, but I realize that immersion into another culture is always incomplete. Continuing to walk with migrants and immigrants is the greatest joy of my life. May you also grow in appreciation of your own cultures and honor the cultures others.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
