Mi casa es tu casa
Jesús dijo: “Porque fui forastero y ustedes me recibieron en su casa”. (Mt. 25:35) Acoger a un extraño puede ser la mayor virtud del fiel latino. La bienvenida latina es “mi casa es tu casa”. A menudo me dicen: “Padre, usted tiene su casa humilde en Michoacán – Jalisco – Zacatecas – San Luís Potosí” y muchos otros lugares. Como Redentorista, profesé un voto de pobreza y tengo más casas que los más ricos del mundo, mientras que no tengo el título de ninguna. En 2007 tuve el privilegio de pasar seis semanas viajando por todo México para visitar mis “casas humildes”.
Cuando llegué a casa de mi viaje, escribí este poema, realmente una oración que refleja mi experiencia de ser acogido como un extranjero en México. Estaba participando en un programa sabático cerca de Tucson, AZ. El poema surgió de mi reflexión sobre “¡Hagan espacio para nosotros en sus corazones!” (2 Cor. 7:2)
Mis Corintios
Señor, has venido a mí, en una multitud.
Migrantes tocando mi vida
de muchas maneras invisibles.
No solo, no me has herido
o me engañaron o me condenaron.
Me has llevado
en tu hogar más humilde.
Me has alimentado con los frutos de la tierra
y condimentado mi vida
con la salsa de tus cuentos.
Has enriquecido mi vida
por la generosidad de los pobres.
Juan e Irma insistiendo
que su cama era mi cama,
mientras dormían en el piso.
Martín y Rosa visitando hasta la madrugada
contándome su vida desde la última vez que vimos,
el día de su boda hace 12 años.
Rafa riéndose y entregándome una cerveza
Para celebrar el final de una cosecha.
Tavo bañando a un vagabundo.
Y Araceli que me bendice mientras yacía muriendo.
Como Pablo, me jacto de mis Corintios,
mis migrantes, mi pueblo.
Sin embargo, mi jactancia está en ti, o Señor.
Como dijiste: “Cuando era un extraño,
me acogiste…”
Protege, oh, Señor, a mis Corintios,
especialmente aquellos que cruzan el desierto hoy.
El ministerio con migrantes e inmigrantes comienza y termina con el descubrimiento de Jesús en los pobres y marginados del mundo. No hace falta ir a América Latina para descubrir cómo acoger a un extranjero. Cuando recibimos genuinamente al extranjero, damos la bienvenida a Cristo.

Mi casa es tu casa
(My home is your home)
Jesus said, “For I was …. a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Mt. 25:35) Welcoming a stranger may be the greatest virtue of the faithful Latino. The Latino welcome is “mi casa es tu casa”. Often, I am told: “Padre, tienes tu pobre casa en (you have a humble home in) Michoacán, Jalisco, Zacatecas, San Luís Potosí” and many other places. As a Redemptorist, I professed a vow of poverty and have more homes than the richest people in the world, while I have the title to none. In 2007, I had the privilege of spending six weeks traveling by bus throughout Mexico to visit my “humble homes”.
When I came home from my trip, I wrote this poem, really a prayer reflecting on my experience of being welcomed as a stranger in Mexico. I was taking part in a sabbatical program near Tucson, AZ. The poem arose from my reflection on “Make room for us in your hearts!” (2 Cor. 7:2)
My Corinthians
Lord, you have come to me in a multitude.
Migrants touching my life
in many unseen ways.
Not only have you not injured me
or cheated me or condemned me.
You have taken me
into your humblest of homes.
You have fed me with the fruits of the earth
and spiced my life
with the salsa of your stories.
You have enriched my life
by the generosity of the poor.
Juan and Irma insisting

while they slept on the floor.
Martin and Rosa visiting long into the night,
telling me of their life since we last met,
the day of their wedding 12 years before.
Rafa laughing and handing me a beer
to celebrate the end of a harvest.
Tavo bathing a homeless man.
And Araceli blessing me as she lay dying.
Like Paul, I boast of my Corinthians,
my migrants, my people.
Yet, my boast is in you, O Lord.
For as you said, “When I was a stranger,
you welcomed me…”
Protect, O Lord, my Corinthians,
especially those crossing the desert today.
Ministry with migrants and immigrants begins and ends with discovering Jesus in the poor and marginalized of the world. One does not have to go to Latin America to discover how to welcome a stranger. When we genuinely receive the stranger, we welcome Christ.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
