Ayer consideramos el mensaje del Papa Francisco para la Jornada Mundial de la Paz. El mensaje es apropiado para un mundo que atraviesa muchas crisis al mismo tiempo. Hace veinte años, con el mundo tambaleándose por los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001, el Papa Juan Pablo II se dirigió al Día Mundial de la Paz, No hay paz sin justicia, No hay justicia sin perdón.
Refiriéndose a los ataques terroristas dice:
En las circunstancias actuales, ¿cómo podemos hablar de justicia y, al mismo tiempo, de perdón como fuentes y condiciones de la paz? Mi respuesta es que se puede y se debe hablar de ello a pesar de la dificultad que comporta, entre otros motivos, porque se tiende a pensar en la justicia y en el perdón en términos alternativos. Pero el perdón se opone al rencor y a la venganza, no a la justicia.
Perdón, que cura las heridas y restablece en profundidad las relaciones humanas truncadas.
El perdón en modo alguno se contrapone a la justicia, porque no consiste en inhibirse ante las legítimas exigencias de reparación del orden violado. El perdón tiende más bien a esa plenitud de la justicia que conduce a la tranquilidad del orden y que, siendo mucho más que un frágil y temporal cese de las hostilidades, pretende una profunda recuperación de las heridas abiertas. Para esta recuperación, son esenciales ambos, la justicia y el perdón.
Cuando escribió lo siguiente, es bueno considerar esto como su experiencia personal que lo movió a visitar al hombre en prisión por su intento de asesinato del Papa.
Volviendo a mi reflexión para la Jornada de la Paz 1997 («Ofrece el perdón, recibe la paz»), deseo recordar que el perdón, antes de ser un hecho social, nace en el corazón de cada uno.
La paz es la condición para el desarrollo, pero una verdadera paz es posible solamente por el perdón.
El Papa Juan Pablo II concluye su mensaje:
No hay paz sin justicia, no hay justicia sin perdón: esto es lo que quiero anunciar en este Mensaje a creyentes y no creyentes, a los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad, que se preocupan por el bien de la familia humana y por su futuro.
No hay paz sin justicia, no hay justicia sin perdón: esto es lo que quiero recordar a cuantos tienen en sus manos el destino de las comunidades humanas, para que se dejen guiar siempre en sus graves y difíciles decisiones por la luz del verdadero bien del hombre, en la perspectiva del bien común.
No hay paz sin justicia, no hay justicia sin perdón: no me cansaré de repetir esta exhortación a cuantos, por una razón o por otra, alimentan en su interior odio, deseo de venganza o ansia de destrucción.
Que todos hagamos un mejor trabajo por la paz que lo que hicimos después del mensaje del Papa Juan Pablo II.

Yesterday, we considered Pope Francis’ message for World Day of Peace. The message is appropriate for a world experiencing many crises at the same time. Twenty years ago, with the world reeling from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II addressed the World Day of Peace, No Peace Without Justice, No Justice without Forgiveness.
Referring to the terrorist attacks he says:
In the present circumstances, how can we speak of justice and forgiveness as the source and condition of peace? We can and we must, no matter how difficult this may be; a difficulty which often comes from thinking that justice and forgiveness are irreconcilable. But forgiveness is the opposite of resentment and revenge, not of justice.
Forgiveness … heals and rebuilds troubled human relations from their foundations.
Forgiveness is in no way opposed to justice, as if to forgive meant to overlook the need to right the wrong done. It is rather the fullness of justice, leading to that tranquility of order which is much more than a fragile and temporary cessation of hostilities, involving as it does the deepest healing of the wounds which fester in human hearts. Justice and forgiveness are both essential to such healing.
When he wrote the following, it is good to consider this as his personal experience that moved him to visit the man in prison for his assassination attempt on the Pope.
I wrote in my Message for the 1997 World Day of Peace (“Offer Forgiveness and Receive Peace”), I would reaffirm that forgiveness inhabits people’s hearts before it becomes a social reality.
Peace is essential for development, but true peace is made possible only through forgiveness.
Pope John Paul II concludes his message:
No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: this is what in this Message I wish to say to believers and non-believers alike, to all men and women of good will who are concerned for the good of the human family and for its future.
No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: this is what I wish to say to those responsible for the future of the human community, entreating them to be guided in their weighty and difficult decisions by the light of man’s true good, always with a view to the common good.
No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: I shall not tire of repeating this warning to those who, for one reason or another, nourish feelings of hatred, a desire for revenge or the will to destroy.
May we all do a better job of working for peace than we did after Pope John Paul II’s message.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
