Recordar el año 2021
El año 2021 me bendijo con un día que no olvidaré. El 1 de agosto, invitamos a los jóvenes que participaron en una iniciativa de Pastoral Juvenil Redentorista en Denver de 1991 a 1996. Celebramos el trigésimo aniversario de la fundación de Casa San Alfonso. Sabía que iba a ser un buen día, pero me sentí abrumado por los recuerdos y la gratitud de todos.
El Capítulo General Redentorista de 1991 llamó a todas las Provincias a tomar iniciativas en la pastoral juvenil y de jóvenes adultos que llevaran nuestros apostolados a un mayor contacto con los jóvenes. Dos sacerdotes y un hermano iniciaron una misión para caminar con jóvenes vulnerables en Denver. Abrimos Casa San Alfonso buscando entrar en la vida de los jóvenes del barrio de la Iglesia de San José. El barrio tenía una mala reputación. Muchos jóvenes de la zona abandonaron la escuela o eran jóvenes que no tenían la oportunidad de ir a la escuela. Muchos hombres jóvenes vinieron de México para encontrar trabajo o reunirse con sus padres aquí, quienes recientemente obtuvieron un estatus legal a través de Amnistía. Las tentaciones de las drogas y la vida de pandillas estaban presentes en el barrio.
Había un grupo de jóvenes activo en la parroquia que trabajaba con jóvenes que participaban en servicios y programas religiosos con sus familias, pero queríamos llegar a aquellos que no participaban en las actividades de la iglesia. Salimos de la rectoría a una casa en el barrio. Invitamos a los jóvenes de entre 17 y 25 años a visitarnos en cualquier momento. “Hay frijoles en la estufa y tortillas en el refrigerador. Nuestra casa es tu casa”. La gente preguntó ¿qué tipo de programas ofreceríamos a los jóvenes? Les dijimos que no lo sabíamos. Los jóvenes nos harán saber lo que quieren.
En la celebración de nuestro aniversario, fue maravilloso descubrir cuánto significaba la Casa para los reunidos. Había recuerdos de los buenos tiempos, pero también de los momentos en que la Casa era un lugar de consuelo, sanación, maduración, guía, perdón, aprecio cultural, crecimiento espiritual, servicio y ministerio. Fue hermoso conocer a los cónyuges y familias de la comunidad de Casa.
Algunos de los jóvenes convivieron con la comunidad redentorista en la casa hasta por dos años. Las historias de los involucrados en la Casa durante varios años me asombraron por lo que estaban más agradecidos. Uno resumió la experiencia de Casa como llegar a respetarse a sí mismo. “El mundo nos ve como perdedores, delincuentes y criminales. Aprendí que soy digno. Aprendí a respetar a los demás. Y aprendí a ser responsable”.

Remembering 2021
The year 2021 blessed me with one day that I will not forget. On August 1, 2021, we invited young people who took part in a Redemptorist Youth Ministry initiative in Denver from 1991 to 1996. We celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Casa San Alfonso. I knew that it was going to be a good day, but I was overwhelmed by the memories and the gratitude of so many.
The Redemptorist General Chapter in 1991 called on every Province to take initiatives in youth and young adult ministry that would bring our apostolates into greater contact with youth. Two priests and one brother initiated a mission to walk with vulnerable young people in Denver. We opened Casa San Alfonso seeking to enter the lives of youth in the barrio of St. Joseph’s Church. The neighborhood had a tough reputation. Many young people in the area were dropouts from school or young people lacking the opportunity to go to school. Many young men came from Mexico to find work or reunite with parents here who recently gained legal status through Amnesty. The temptations of drugs and gang life were present in the barrio.
There was an active youth group in the parish that worked with young people who participated in religious services and programs with their families, but we wanted to reach out to those who were not regular in activities of the church. We moved out of the rectory into a home in the barrio. We invited young people in their late teens and twenties to drop in at any time. “There are beans on the stove, and tortillas in the refrigerator. Nuestra casa es tu casa.” People asked what kind of programs we would offer to the young people, and we said that we did not know. The young people will let us know what they want.
At our anniversary celebration, it was wonderful to discover how much the Casa meant to those gathered. There were memories of the good times, but also of the moments when the Casa was a place for consolation, healing, maturation, guidance, forgiveness, cultural appreciation, spiritual growth, service and ministry. It was beautiful to meet spouses and families of the Casa community.
Some of the young people lived with the Redemptorist community in the house for up to two years. The stories of those involved in the Casa for several years amazed me as to what they were most grateful about. One summarized the Casa experience as coming to respect himself. “The world looks at us as losers, delinquents and criminals. I learned that I am worthy. I learned to respect others. And I learned to be responsible.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
