Como niños católicos, muchos de nosotros llevábamos medallas o teníamos tarjetas en la billetera que decían: “Soy católico. En caso de emergencia, llame a un sacerdote”. Nuestro deseo era que un sacerdote nos diera el sacramento de los enfermos cuando estábamos en peligro de muerte. El Unción de los Enfermos es para sanar, pero también perdona al pecador como preparación para encontrarse con nuestro Señor. Todo pecado es perdonado dentro del sacramento, incluso si la persona no puede confesar el pecado en ese momento.
Estaba desayunando con amigos después de la misa de la mañana. Una mesera se dio cuenta de que era sacerdote. Me pidió que orara por su abuelo que estaba muy enfermo. Estaba en el hospital. Le pregunté su nombre y en qué cuarto estaba para visitarlo. Ella dijo: “Él es católico, pero no va a la iglesia. ¿Aún así irías a verlo?” Dije: “Por supuesto”.
Cuando lo vi, estaba en coma. No había miembros de la familia presentes, así que lo ungí y dejé una nota para la familia. Murió unos días después. La familia preguntó si el funeral podría realizarse en la parroquia. Nuevamente, me dijeron que no iba mucho a la iglesia. Dije: “Por supuesto que habrá misa y funeral para él en la parroquia”. Durante la preparación para el funeral, entendía la preocupación de la familia. En algún momento de su vida, el hombre fue criticado por no asistir a misa con regularidad. No se sentía cómodo en la comunidad, pensando que la gente lo despreciaba por no asistir regularmente a la misa dominical. Creía que no era un buen católico.
Después del funeral, alguien dijo: “Ojalá el abuelo hubiera escuchado tu homilía. Hoy se habría sentido cómodo en la Iglesia. Gracias por verlo antes de morir”. Es difícil imaginar el dolor de creer que no eres aceptado dentro de una comunidad de la iglesia. Necesitamos hacer más por aquellos que se han sentido ofendidos.

As Catholic children, many of us wore medals or had cards in our wallets that said, “I am Catholic. In case of an emergency, call a priest.” It was our desire to have a priest give us the sacrament of the sick when in danger of death. The sacrament is for healing, but it also forgives the sinner as preparation to meet our Lord. All sin is forgiven within the sacrament, even if the person is unable to confess sin at the time.
I was having breakfast with friends after morning Mass. A waitress noticed that I was a priest. She asked me to pray for her Grandfather who was very ill. He was in the hospital. I asked his name and what room he was in, so that I could visit him. She said, “He is Catholic, but he doesn’t go to church. Would you still go to see him?” I said, “Of course.”
When I saw him, he was in a coma. There were no family members present, so I anointed him and left a note for the family. He died a few days later. The family asked if the funeral could be held at the parish. Again, I was told that he did not go to church much. I said, “Of course there will be Mass and funeral for him at the parish.” While preparing for the funeral, I began to understand the family’s concern. At some point in the man’s life, he was criticized for not attending Mass regularly. He did not feel comfortable in the community, thinking that people looked down on him for not regularly attending Sunday Mass. He believed that he was not a good Catholic.
After the funeral, someone said, “I wish grandpa would have heard your homily. He would have been comfortable in Church today. Thank you for seeing him before he died.” It is hard to imagine the pain of believing that you are not accepted within a church community. We need to do more for those who have been offended.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
