La Fe Trique
Una de las bendiciones de mi tiempo en Fresno como director del ministerio campesino fue descubrir las tradiciones y la fe de comunidades indígenas de México. Hay muchas naciones indígenas dentro de México. Las comunidades luchan por preservar su idioma, historia y cultura. A medida que sus hijos asisten a escuelas en los Estados Unidos, comienzan a perder su identidad con su propia historia. Una de las comunidades más intrigantes es Trique. (descrito en parte en el blog de ayer)
Después de la primera celebración de San Martín de Tours, me reuní una vez cada dos meses con los líderes del festival. La reunión de planificación incluyó solo a los hombres. Las mujeres estaban en otra habitación haciendo sus vestidos para el festival del próximo año. Mientras hacían sus vestidos, las mujeres planeaban la comida. Al ver a las mujeres tejer sus vestidos, me dijeron que cada año, las mujeres hacían su vestido de invierno, y su nación era conocida por las mujeres vestidas de rojo. A las jóvenes se les enseñaron lecciones sobre su herencia y cultura mientras aprendían a tejer sus vestidos para la fiesta de San Martín.
Las mujeres parecían ser las guardianas del idioma y la cultura. Esto puede ser un poco simplificado, pero las mujeres hablaban trique, los hombres hablaban trique y español ya que trabajaban principalmente con campesinos mexicanos y los niños hablaban trique e inglés. Se sentían más cómodos con el inglés cuando iban a la escuela.
Cuando ocurrió una muerte trágica en la comunidad, el funeral se llevó a cabo en la Iglesia Católica y luego del entierro un líder espiritual de la comunidad ofreció una bendición indígena de los difuntos que yo no entendí. La fe del pueblo era una mezcla de tradición católica y oración indígena. Como sacerdote acompañando a la gente, tuve que caminar suavemente con ellos, reconociendo que los Trique estaban al margen de la Iglesia por la pobreza y el aislamiento histórico como pueblo. Que Dios bendiga a toda la gente Trique en la celebración de San Martín Caballero.

Trique Faith
One of the blessings of my time in Fresno as director for Campesino ministry was discovering the traditions and faith of many indigenous communities of Mexico. There are many indigenous nations within Mexico. The communities struggle to preserve their language, history and culture. As their children attend schools in the U.S., they begin to lose their identity with their own history. One of the more intriguing communities is the Trique. (described in part in yesterday’s blog)
After the first celebration of San Martin of Tours, I met once every two months with the leaders of the festival. The planning meeting included only the men. The women were in another room making their dresses for the next year´s festival. While they made their dresses, the women planned for the food. Watching the women weave their dresses, I was told that each year, the women made their winter dress, and their nation was known the women dressed in red. The young women were taught lessons in their heritage and culture while they learned how to make their dress for the fiesta of San Martin.
The women appeared to be the guardians of the language and culture. This may be a bit over simplified, but he women spoke Trique, the men spoke Trique and Spanish since they worked mostly with Mexican farm workers, and the children spoke Trique and English. They were more comfortable with English as they went to school.
When a tragic death took place in the community, the funeral took place in the Catholic Church and after the burial a spiritual leader from the community took over from the priest and offered an indigenous blessing of the departed that I did not understand. The faith of the people was a mixture of Catholic tradition and indigenous prayer. As a priest accompanying the people, I had to walk gently with them, recognizing that the Trique were on the margins of the Church because of poverty and historical isolation as a people. Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
