No puedes extrañarlo.

Presence, the Key to Ministry

As Pope Francis invites us to a “renewed personal encounter with Jesus”, we may look to the unsuspected encounters that we make with Jesus. Obviously, we look to encounters with Jesus, seeing him in the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the prisoner. We also need to be open to his presence in people of other faiths. I spoke one day in a Baptist Church along with the pastor. Our topic was, “the scandal of divisions between churches.” After the service, many people responded enthusiastically about having a Baptist Minister and a Catholic Priest being so comfortable with each other. We told the people, “We are friends. We just sit in different pews.”

I have been in Eden, Texas for the past two months. I am covering for a pastor who is on sabbatical. There are also two mission churches attached to the parish. On Sundays, there are Masses in the three churches. I drive about 65 miles to celebrate in each community. During the week, I spend most of my time in Eden.

In rural ministry, presence is the key to ministry. Marty is the Baptist Minister. He is a big man. You cannot miss him. He is known by everyone in town. People see him at many school activities. They see him at the supermarket, the gas stations, visiting the sick, attending town events such as the town Halloween celebration, “Scare on the Square.” He is very friendly and in our short time knowing each other, we have become friends. He has noticed my presence in the community. We have seen each other at football games, a cross country meet for the high school and “Scare on the Square.” He knows that I went to meet the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) group at the school. Others have told him about seeing me around town.

I asked him about the relationship of ministers in the churches in town. He said that he is the only full-time minister in any of the churches in the area. As I have come to know Marty, his presence is noted by people in the community. Even though people may be of different faith traditions, being the only full-time minister in town, he has a special place in this community. Watching him interact with people around town, an essential part of ministry is simple being present. Marty is part of my renewed encounter with Jesus.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

A renewed personal encounter with Jesus – Un encuentro personal renovado con Jesús Don’t give up – No te rindas
