En solidaridad por la misión a un mundo herido
Vivimos en un “Mundo Herido”: un mundo herido por guerras, violencia, gobiernos fallidos, una pandemia global, migración en su punto más alto, disturbios políticos y sociales en muchas partes del mundo, desastres naturales, divisiones en muchas naciones e incluso divisiones dentro de la Iglesia Católica. Nuestro gobierno general redentorista llama a los redentoristas a ser “Testigos del Redentor, en solidaridad por la misión a un mundo herido”. Uno de nuestros ministerios principales es ofrecer misiones parroquiales. Como el Papa Juan Pablo II llamó a una nueva evangelización que sea “nueva en su ardor, en sus métodos y expresión”, necesitamos nuevos modelos para ofrecer misiones parroquiales.
Dios es bueno y nuestro mundo necesita testigos de esperanza y unidad para responder a los desafíos que dividen a las personas. He predicado misiones parroquiales en casi 200 parroquias en quince estados durante los últimos treinta años. La mayoría de esas misiones fueron de dos semanas, con una semana predicada en inglés y una semana en español. Las misiones son para animar a las personas fieles a entrar más fielmente en todos los aspectos de la vida católica. Mis misiones han estado en muchas comunidades rurales y en parroquias tratando de involucrarme más en dar la bienvenida a inmigrantes e inmigrantes en sus comunidades.
Durante la pandemia de COVID 19, nuestras iglesias han luchado para ministrar a muchas personas con restricciones para reunirse. La idea de ofrecer una misión parroquial en este momento es un gran desafío. A medida que pasa el tiempo, muchos están ansiosos por volver a la normalidad que ha sido difícil de alcanzar. Ya hemos visto una gran disminución en la participación en la misión parroquial durante años recientes, y con COVID no podemos llamar de manera realista a reuniones grandes de personas en las iglesias para participar en una misión predicada.
En este momento, experimentaré ofreciendo una misión parroquial en Eden, Texas. Es una ciudad pequeña y hay dos iglesias misioneras adjuntas a la parroquia. Estoy tomando el lugar del pastor mientras se toma un tiempo de sabático. En lugar de ofrecer una misión de cinco días en una semana, ofreceré una misión de cinco semanas, con un tema para cada semana. Ofreceré servicios cuatro noches a la semana en tres iglesias diferentes y una vez a la semana en español. Ofrecer las conferencias misioneras parroquiales durante cuatro noches cada semana en tres pueblos diferentes permite que grupos más pequeños asistan la noche que les resulte más conveniente, y al ofrecer la misión durante cinco semanas en dos idiomas permite que más personas asistan a la misión.

In solidarity for mission to a wounded world
We are living in a “Wounded World”. A world wounded by wars, violence, failed governments, a global pandemic, migration at an all-time high, political and social unrest in many parts of the world, natural disasters, divisions in many nations, and even divisions within the Catholic Church. Our Redemptorist general government calls on Redemptorists to be “Witnesses of the Redeemer, in Solidarity for Mission to a Wounded World.” One of our primary ministries is to offer parish missions. As Pope John Paul II called for a new evangelization that is “new in its ardor, in its methods and expression,” we need new models for offering parish missions.
God is good and our world needs witnesses of hope and unity to respond to the challenges that divide people. I have preached parish missions in nearly 200 parishes in fifteen states over the past thirty years. Most of those missions were for two weeks, with one week preached in English and one week in Spanish. The missions are to animate faithful people to enter more faithfully in all aspects of Catholic life. My missions have been in many rural communities and in parishes trying to engage more in welcoming migrants and immigrants into their communities.
During the COVID 19 pandemic, our churches have struggled to minister to many people with restrictions for gathering. The idea of offering a parish mission at this time is a great challenge. As time passes many are anxious for a return to normal that has been elusive. We already have seen a great decline in participation in parish mission that last five evenings, and with COVID we cannot realistically call for large gatherings of people in churches to participate in a preached mission.
At this time, I will be experimenting in offering a parish mission in Eden, Texas. It is a small town, and there are two mission churches attached to the parish. I am taking the place of the pastor while he goes on a sabbatical. Instead of offering a five-day mission in one week, I will be offering a mission for five weeks, with one theme for each week. I will offer services four evenings a week in three different churches and once a week in Spanish. Offering the parish mission conferences for four evenings each weed in three different towns allows for smaller groups to attend on the evening of their convenience, and by offering the mission over five weeks in two languages allows for more people to attend the mission.
Tomorrow, I will begin a five-day series of reflections on the proposed topics for the mission.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
