Apreciación de la familia
La migración muestra la importancia de la familia más que cualquier otro ministerio. He pasado mi vida en una variedad de ministerios, pero los últimos treinta años sirviendo a migrantes e inmigrantes de todo el mundo. Mientras el mundo observa las historias de personas que huyen de sus países de origen por una variedad de razones, desde opresión, violencia, persecución religiosa, desastres naturales y gobiernos fallidos, vemos personas que buscan desesperadamente una vida mejor para ellos y sus hijos. Las imágenes de personas en centros para personas desplazadas en las fronteras de Estados Unidos y campos de refugiados en África, Asia, el Oriente Medio y Europa revelan los tiempos desesperados que enfrentan tantas personas. Si a todos los factores que impulsan la migración se añaden una pandemia mundial, debemos considerar lo que es importante en la vida misma.
Personalmente, en lugar de reflexionar sobre la desesperación global que empuja a las personas a migrar, este fin de semana ha sido un momento para considerar las bendiciones de la familia. Ver las imágenes de familias que sufren, pero esperanzadas que buscan refugio me recuerda que debo estar agradecido por mi propia familia y las familias de aquellos a quienes amo y sirvo.
Ayer celebré el matrimonio de Ross y Lakminie. Mientras se preparaban para su matrimonio, reflexionaron sobre sus historias familiares y lo que tenían en común en los valores que sus padres les transmitieron. Vienen de orígenes muy distintos, pero encontraron valores profundamente arraigados en el amor y la familia que comparten entre ellos. Eligieron lecturas de las Escrituras que hablan de los valores que esperan guiarlos en su matrimonio. Vienen de diferentes culturas, historias religiosas y comunidades. Uno creció en una gran ciudad y el otro en una pequeña ciudad de menos de mil habitantes. Los valores que encuentran en la carta de San Pablo a los Corintios y en las Bienaventuranzas se reflejan en sus dos historias. Juntos, entran al matrimonio reconociendo los valores de paciencia, fidelidad, amor, y perdón. Cada uno reflejado en sus experiencias únicas. Entran en matrimonio aspirando a las virtudes que han recibido de sus familias únicas.
Hoy, mi familia celebra los 70 años de mi hermana, Mary Pat. Vamos a reunirnos con varias generaciones de familiares. Contaremos nuestras historias y recordaremos el amor que nos transmitieron nuestros padres y familiares. Recordaremos los buenos tiempos y la supervivencia de los tiempos difíciles. Es la familia la que fomenta los valores que nos guían a cada uno.
Mientras celebramos los momentos de las esperanzas de una pareja que comienza a casarse y de una familia que celebra un cumpleaños, recordemos a aquellos migrantes que buscan una buena vida para sus familias. Ore también para que los gobiernos del mundo busquen justicia y oportunidades para toda su gente.

Appreciation of Family
Migration displays the importance of family more than any other ministry. I have spent a lifetime in a variety of ministries, but the past thirty years serving migrants and immigrants from all over the world. As the world observes the stories of people fleeing their countries of origin for a variety of reasons from oppression, violence, religious persecution, natural disasters and failed governments, we see people desperately seeking a better life for themselves and their children. The images of people in centers for displaced people on the borders of the United States and refugee camps in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and in Europe reveal the desperate times so many people face. Add to all the push factors for migration a world-wide pandemic and we need to consider what is important in life itself.
Personally, instead of reflecting on the global desperation pushing people to migrate, this weekend has been a time to reflect on the blessings of family. Seeing the images of suffering but hopeful families seeking refuge reminds me to be grateful for my own family and the families of those whom I love and serve.
Yesterday, I celebrated the marriage of Ross and Lakminie. As they prepared for their marriage, they reflected on their family histories and what they had in common in the values their parents passed on to them. They come from very distinct backgrounds, but they found values deeply rooted in love and family that they share with each other. They chose readings from scripture that speak to values that they hope guide them in their marriage. They come from different cultures, religious history and communities. One grew up in a large city and the other in a small town of under 1,000. The values that they find in St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians and in the Eight Beatitudes are reflected in both their histories. Together, they enter marriage recognizing the values of patience, endurance, fidelity, love, and forgiveness. Each reflected in their unique experiences. They enter marriage aspiring to the virtues they have received from their unique families.
Today, my family celebrates the 70th birthday of my sister, Mary Pat. It is a time that we come together with several generations of family members. We will tell our stories and remember the love passed on to us by our parents and relatives. We will remember the good times and the survival from the difficult times. It is family that fosters the values that guide each of us.
As we celebrate moments of the hopes of a couple beginning marriage and of a family celebrating a birthday, let us remember those migrants seeking a good life for their families. Pray also for governments of the world to seek justice and opportunity for all of their people.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
