The past few days, I have written about the need to “walk with my people.” I considered “with who did Jesus walk,” and “walking with Juan Diego.” On Sunday, we read about the transfiguration of Jesus, as the three apostles, Peter, James and John saw Jesus walking and talking with Moses and Elijah. At both Masses that I celebrated in Spanish, the Mass began with the song, “Caminaré.” Knowing that it would be sung at the Mass, I thought about the apostles’ experience. Jesus called them from their boats and told them that they would be ‘fishers of men.’ Jesus was their friend, mentor and teacher. They witnessed him healing the outcast and forgiving the sinner. As they walked with Jesus, they believed in him. On the mountain, they discovered with whom they walked. The cloud came upon them and they heard a voice from the cloud say, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” They came to understand that they walked in the presence of God.

As I considered the discovery of the Apostles, that Jesus is the Son of God, the opening song of the Mass took on more meaning. “Caminaré en presencia del Señor.” “I will walk in the presence of the Lord.” As I listen to the advice of my mentor in Hispanic Ministry, Fr. Enrique López, the image of walking with another involves learning how to accompany the other. It means entering into a relationship. Learning to walk with our neighbor and learning to walk in the presence of the Lord is needed as we begin to recover from the crises that shaped the past year.

We want to walk on a path to a better future as we recover from the many crises of the past year. It takes patience, humility and faith. We dream of a better future, but it begins one step at a time. We are not alone as we walk with one another and we walk with God.

Still looking for help

Help me prepare a sacramental program for children with special needs and limited time for preparation.

Today’s question for reflection:  How do you teach children about the presence of the Lord?

Please share with me your memories. Write to: padremigrante@gmail.com

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
