Virtue of Migrants
“To Evangelize and to be Evangelized by the Poor”
The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer elects a Superior General every six years. At the beginning of his term, the Superior General presents a theme to animate the community in our mission to serve the “most abandoned”. In the 1980’s, our Superior General said that we were “to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” Obviously, priests and religious men are to evangelize, but humbling ourselves to recognize that the poor can evangelize us was not easy for many to accept.
The saying was inspiring, but allowing myself to truly be evangelized by the poor has been a journey with many curves and potholes on the way. My life as a priest was filled with the expected ministries of the priest. I was doing, doing, doing the works of the priest. I was doing things for the poor, including jail ministry, youth ministry, sacramental preparation, funerals and counseling. Yet, in all this doing for the needy, it was hard to observe how the poor could evangelize me.
Looking back, I can tell of many memorable moments when poor people helped me see the world through their experiences, but my appreciation of the virtue of the poor has taken on more meaning during the present struggles with the COVID19 pandemic, economic insecurity, divisive politics, environmental disasters, and the anxiety all these challenges cause. While many may struggle with frustration and depression in these times, I look to migrants, the poor and those of the fringes of society for testimony to faith and hope.
People on the periphery, those on the fringes of society often display faith and hope when everything around them appears out of control. The stories of people crossing deserts, rivers and oceans in search of relief from war, persecution, economic insecurity and relief of desperation show the resilience of the poor and their confidence in faith. For the next few days, I will reflect on the virtue of migrants. Sometimes that virtue is professed in words, but always it is shown in action.
I invite you to walk with me as I reflect on how migrants evangelize by their witness to faith during moments of crisis.

“Evangelizar y ser evangelizado por los pobres”
La Congregación del Santísimo Redentor elige un Superior General cada seis años. Al comienzo de su mandato, el Superior General presenta un tema para animar a la comunidad en nuestra misión de servir a los “más abandonados”. En los años 80, nuestro Superior General dijo que debíamos “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Obviamente, los sacerdotes y los religiosos debemos evangelizar, pero humillarnos para reconocer que los pobres pueden evangelizarnos no es fácil de aceptar para muchos.
El dicho fue inspirador, pero permitir que los pobres me evangelizan ha sido un camino con muchas curvas y baches en el camino. Mi vida como sacerdote estuvo llena de los ministerios esperados del sacerdote. Estaba haciendo, haciendo, haciendo las obras del sacerdote. Estaba haciendo cosas por los pobres, incluido el ministerio a los encarcelados, el pastoral juvenil, la preparación sacramental, los funerales y el asesoramiento. Sin embargo, en todo esto haciendo por los necesitados, era difícil observar cómo los pobres podían evangelizarme.
Considerando mi historia, puedo contar muchos momentos memorables cuando los pobres me ayudaron a ver el mundo a través de sus experiencias, pero mi apreciación de la virtud de los pobres ha sido más significante durante las luchas actuales con la pandemia de COVID19, la inseguridad económica y las políticas divisivas, desastres ambientales y la ansiedad que causan todos estos desafíos. Si bien muchos pueden luchar contra la frustración y la depresión en estos tiempos, yo considero a los migrantes, los pobres y los marginados de la sociedad como testigos de fe y esperanza.
La gente de la periferia, los marginados de la sociedad a menudo muestran fe y esperanza cuando todo a su alrededor parece estar fuera de control. Las historias de personas que cruzan desiertos, ríos y océanos en busca de alivio de la guerra, la persecución, la inseguridad económica y el alivio de la desesperación muestran la virtud de los pobres y su confianza en Dios. Durante los próximos días reflexionaré sobre la virtud de los migrantes. A veces esa virtud se profesa con palabras, pero siempre se muestra en acción.
Los invito a caminar conmigo mientras reflexiono sobre cómo los migrantes evangelizan con su testimonio de fe en momentos de crisis.
