2. Seeking new ways – Buscando nuevo camino
Soy parte de un grupo de ex alumnos del Seminario Redentorista que comenzaron a reunirse todas las semanas en una reunión de ZOOM después de que comenzara COVID. Es un gran grupo. Nos decidimos por un tema para la reunión de cada semana. Probablemente consideraremos el siguiente tema durante varias semanas. Como no puedo asistir a la primera discusión, escribí la siguiente reflexión.
Lo que significa para mí el sacerdocio católico
Cuando me convertí en director de vocaciones en 1984, me encontraba en un momento de crisis personal en mi propia vocación. No quería dejar a los Redentoristas, pero no estaba feliz en ese momento. Había sido ordenado 11 años. Me sorprendió un poco que el P. Jack Dowd, nuestro superior provincial dijo, estamos considerando a ti como director de vocaciones. En ese momento, tuve que responder a la pregunta, “¿Por qué ser redentorista?” Las preguntas de jóvenes con inquietud a la vida religiosa y el sacerdocio me llevaron a un lugar mucho mejor en mi propia vocación. Me di cuenta de que mi mayor deseo era servir a los “más abandonados”. En mis primeros años, tuve una relación especial con los alcohólicos y sus familias. Para mí estaba claro que el ministerio ordinario a menudo no entendía las vidas de la adicción y su realidad en la vida de las familias.
Después de mi tiempo como director de vocaciones, mi ministerio pasó a trabajar con inmigrantes, particularmente con los jóvenes recién llegados a este país. Reconocí que mi identidad estaba vinculada a ser un misionero, aquí en los EE. UU., Pero trabajar con personas al margen de nuestra sociedad. Cuando cumplí 25 años de profesión, les dije a mis padres que quería celebrar más mi profesión que mi sacerdocio. Dije que Redentorista define “quién soy”, mientras que el sacerdocio define “cómo sirvo”. Fue bueno que celebré mi 25 aniversario de profesión, porque mi papá estuvo presente para estar orgulloso de su hijo ese día. Murió más tarde ese año.
Para mí, el sacerdocio se trata de servicio. Me encanta la Misa del Jueves Santo cuando lavamos los pies de los fieles y escuchamos a Jesús exhortar a los discípulos a que se sirvan unos a otros. Sin embargo, para mí, mi identidad es redentorista, buscando a aquellos que sufren debido a la división dentro de la Iglesia y que necesitan consuelo, consejo y simplemente el amor de Dios y de la Iglesia.

I am part of a group of Redemptorist Seminary alumni who began meeting every week on a ZOOM meeting after COVID began. It is a great group. We settle on a theme for each week’s meeting. We will probably consider the following topic for several weeks. Since I am unable to attend the first discussion, I wrote the following reflection.
What the Catholic Priesthood Means to Me
When I became vocation director in 1984, I was at a point of personal crisis as to my own vocation. I did not want to leave the Redemptorists, but I was not happy at that time. I had been ordained 11 years. It was a bit of a shock to me that Fr. Jack Dowd, our Provincial superior said, we have been considering you for the job of vocation director. At that time, I had to answer the question, “Why be a Redemptorist?” The questions of men considering religious life and priesthood got me into a much better place in my own vocation. I realized that my greatest desire was to serve the “most abandoned”. In my early years, I had a special relationship with alcoholics and their families. It was clear to me that ordinary ministry did not often understand lives of addiction and its reality in the lives of families.
After my time as vocation director, my ministry moved to working with immigrants, particularly recent arrival young people in this country. I recognized that my identity was linked to being a missionary, here in the U.S., but working with people on the margins of our society. When I celebrated 25 years of profession, I told my parents that I wanted to celebrate more my profession than my priesthood. I said that Redemptorist defines “who I am”, while priesthood defines “how I serve.” It was good that I celebrated my 25th anniversary of profession, because my Dad was present to be proud of his son on that day. He died later that year.
For me priesthood is about service. I love the Holy Thursday Mass when we wash the feet of the faithful and hear Jesus admonish the disciples to serve one another. Yet, for me, my identity is Redemptorist, seeking out those suffering because of division within the Church and needing comfort, counsel and simply the love of God and the Church.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
