Trabajando con los pobres
Uno nunca puede caminar en los zapatos de otra persona, pero podemos caminar con ellos. En mi año sabático en 2007, pisqué cerezas, viví en el campamento de trabajadores y comí con los trabajadores migrantes durante la cosecha. Aprendí a recoger las cerezas y descubrí que cuando se hacía correctamente era mucho más fácil que arrancar las cerezas del árbol como hacen los principiantes. Aprendí a colocar una escalera y a tener cuidado al usar la escalera. Me regocijé con los demás cuando llegó la lonchera. Disfruté de una cerveza al final del día. Fue genial sentirse limpio después de una ducha fría. El agua caliente siempre se acababa antes de que me bañara. A menudo, me bañaba en el arroyo como lo hacían muchos otros para evitar la ducha fría. Pero cada día me di cuenta de que mientras trabajaba con los trabajadores migrantes, no compartía sus dificultades. No tenía miedo de que ICE viniera al huerto. No trabajaba por un sueldo, ya que mis baldes se acreditaban a la familia con la que recogía cada día. No tuve que alcanzar una cuota. Podría alejarme por un tiempo para orar o descansar. No pude afrontar las penurias de la vida campesina.
Un esposo y una esposa me contaron su frustración por las dificultades de buscar los sacramentos de la Eucaristía y la Confirmación para sus hijos. Dijeron que los sacerdotes y catequistas no conocían las dificultades que algunas reglas y expectativas parroquiales imponen a los trabajadores migrantes. Les aseguré que los niños serían atendidos en nuestro programa campesino. Mientras inscribía a los niños en las clases, hablé de mi año sabático en el campo. El nerviosismo de nuestra conversación disminuyó. La esposa le dijo a su esposo: “Él es uno de nosotros”.
Nunca fingiría conocer los sufrimientos de los pobres, pero trabajar en el campo me ha dado una relación especial con los campesinos. A menudo, he llevado a personas a recorridos por empacadoras, lecherías, granjas, huertos y viñedos. Ha venido gente a misas, celebraciones de las fiestas de María y de los santos y posadas en entornos rurales. El solo esfuerzo por conocer la vida de los pobres abre la puerta al ministerio con los campesinos.
Si bien muchas diócesis requieren que los seminaristas aprendan español para servir mejor a la diócesis, hay algunas diócesis que asignan seminaristas para que realicen programas de verano para migrantes o incluso que trabajen en los campos durante un verano. Todo lo que hace un ministro para conocer y comprender la vida de los migrantes es una bendición.

Working with the poor
One can never walk in another person’s shoes, but we can walk with them. On my sabbatical in 2007, I picked cherries, lived in the workers camp and ate meals with migrant workers during the harvest. I learned how to pick the cherries, discovering that when done properly it was much easier than plucking the cherries off the tree as beginners do. I learned how to place a ladder and to be careful as I used the ladder. I rejoiced with others when the lunch truck arrived. I relished a beer at the end of the day. It was great to feel clean after a cold shower. The hot water always ran out before I got to bathe. Often, I bathed in the stream as many others did to avoid the cold shower. But each day I realized that as I worked with the migrant workers, I did not share in their hardships. I was not afraid of ICE coming to the orchard. I was not working for pay as my buckets were credited to the family that I picked with each day. I did not have to reach a quota. I could step away for a time to pray or rest. I could not take on the hardships of campesino life.
A husband and wife told me of their frustration with the difficulties of seeking the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation for their children. They said that priests and catechists did not know the hardships that some parish rules and expectations place on migrant workers. I assured them that the children would be taken care of in our campesino program. As I registered the children for classes, I talked about my sabbatical in the fields. The edginess of our conversation subsided. The wife said to her husband, “He is one of us.”
I would never pretend to know the sufferings of the poor, but working in the fields has given me a special relationship with farm workers. Often, I have taken people on tours of packing houses, dairies, farms, orchards and vineyards. People have come to Masses, celebrations of feasts of Mary and the saints, and Posadas in rural settings. Just the effort at learning about the lives of the poor opens the door to ministry with campesinos.
While many dioceses require seminarians to learn Spanish to better serve the diocese, there are some dioceses that assign seminarians to do summer programs for migrants or even that they work in the fields themselves for a summer. Everything a minister does to know and understand the lives of migrants is a blessing.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
