Ojalá estuviera en Talpa
Hoy estoy recordando las peregrinaciones que hacía al santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario en Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. Durante los últimos quince años participé cuatro veces en peregrinaciones desde Cuastecomate, Nayarit hasta Talpa. Es un viaje de casi 150 kilómetros. Nuestros grupos pasaron seis días caminando por las montañas de Nayarit a Jalisco. Tenía planes de ir a la peregrinación este año, pero vine a Baton Rouge para una asignación especial de cuatro meses. Con suerte, iré el año que viene, si Dios quiere.
Mis compañeros de anteriores peregrinaciones llegarán hoy en la mañana a Talpa. Se reunirán para marchar la última milla hasta el santuario al mediodía. Tendrán Misa en el Santuario a las 13:00 horas. Luego disfrutarán de los eventos en la plaza durante los próximos dos días. Echo de menos la celebración de la fiesta de la Candelaria y la Presentación de Jesús con varios miles de peregrinos. La fiesta se celebra con buena liturgia, buena comida y pompa.
La última vez que estuve allí, tuve el privilegio de ser uno de los sacerdotes que llevó la imagen milagrosa de María por parte de la procesión del día de la fiesta. Dudo que muchos otros sacerdotes estadounidenses hayan tenido tal bendición. Cuando vi las caras de tantos niños y peregrinos en el camino mientras cargaba a la Virgen, se me llenaron las lágrimas. ¡Que viva la Virgen de Talpa!

Wish I were in Talpa
Today, I am remembering the pilgrimages that I made to the shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. Over the past fifteen years, I participated four times in pilgrimages from Cuastecomate, Nayarit to Talpa. It is a journey of nearly 100 miles. Our groups spent six days walking in the mountains of Nayarit and Jalisco. I had plans to go for the pilgrimage this year, but I came to Baton Rouge for a special assignment for four months. Hopefully, I will go next year, if God wills.
My companions from previous pilgrimages will arrive in Talpa today in the morning. They will gather to march the final mile to the shrine at noon. They will have Mass at the shrine at 1:00 pm. Then they will enjoy the events on the plaza for the next two days. I miss the celebration of the feast of Candlemas and the Presentation of Jesus with several thousand pilgrims. The feast is celebrated with good liturgy, great food and pageantry.
The last time that I was there, I was privileged as one of the priests who walked with the pilgrims to carry the miraculous image of Mary for part of the procession on the feast day. I doubt if very many other American priests have had such a blessing. I did not expect it at the time, but when I saw the faces of so many children and pilgrims on the way as I carried the Virgin, I teared up. Que viva la Virgen de Talpa!

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
