¿Por que tanta rabia?
Siempre hay momentos en nuestras vidas en los que enfrentamos dificultades. Cuando considero la vida de mis padres, me doy cuenta de que experimentaron crisis. Antes de que cumplieran los diez años, hubo la Gran Depresión y sus padres perdieron el trabajo o estaban bastante limitados en su trabajo. El tazón de polvo golpeó el Medio Oeste. Poco después de la secundaria, comenzó la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Se sacrificaron mucho en sus vidas, pero cuando miramos los álbumes de fotos de esos años, hubo sonrisas, buenos momentos, reuniones familiares y fe. Se enfrentaron al peligro, al hambre, a la desesperación, pero no hablaron de rabia ni de rencores. Hubo una unión con familiares y amigos.
¿Por qué hay tanta ira hoy? ¿Por qué tantos resentimientos por la inmigración, la raza e incluso las creencias religiosas? Estamos en medio de una pandemia y hay injusticia a nuestro alrededor, pero ¿son los problemas de hoy mucho peores que en las generaciones anteriores?
Como redentorista, he trabajado en muchos estados diferentes. He predicado y participado en actividades religiosas en más de treinta estados. He experimentado la vida de la iglesia en varios países. En todos los lugares en los que he estado, conozco gente buena. Algunos sobreviven a condiciones muy difíciles uniéndose para cuidar a los necesitados. A menudo, personas de diferentes religiones se unen por el bien de las personas que sufren. Hay alegría al ver la esperanza en los ojos de los niños y de aquellos que enfrentan dificultades.
Me entristece hoy cuando algunos hablan mal de inmigrantes o personas de otra raza o de otra religión en términos que los deshonran. Ocurre con demasiada frecuencia en escenarios de buenos tiempos que gente habla con dureza sobre “las personas que no son de su raza, religión o clase”. La gente llama a los supervivientes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial como la “generación más grande”. Para mí, su grandeza no se trataba solo de lo que hicieron durante la guerra, sino después, cuando la guerra terminó y vieron a sus socios en la guerra como sus vecinos, ya fueran de diferente raza, fe o posición social.
¿Por qué nuestra generación no puede controlar mejor su ira? Tomemos todos un momento para estar agradecidos por las pequeñas cosas de la vida. Es mucho más fácil ser amable que juzgar. Paz a todos.

Why so much anger?
There are always moments in our lives when we face hardship. When I consider my parents lives, I realize that they knew hardships. Before they were ten years old, there was the Great Depression and their parents lost jobs or were quite limited in their work. The dustbowl hit the Midwest. Soon after high school, World War II began. They sacrificed a great deal in their lives, but when we look at photo albums of those years, there were smiles, good times, family gatherings and there was faith. They faced danger, hunger, desperation, but they did not talk of anger or grudges. There was a togetherness with family and friends.
Why is there so much anger today? Why so much hard feelings about immigration, race, and even religious beliefs? We are in the midst of a pandemic, and there is injustice around us, but are the troubles of today much worse than in previous generations?
As a Redemptorist, I have worked in many different states. I have preached and participated in religious activities in more than thirty states. I have experienced church life in several countries. In every place that I have been, I meet good people. Some surviving very trying conditions by coming together in caring for those in need. Often people of different faiths coming together for the good of suffering people. There is joy in seeing hope in the eyes of children and those who face hardship.
It saddens me today when people begin to talk about immigrants or people of other race or religion in terms that dishonor them. It happens too often in settings of good times that people speak harshly about the “people who are not of their race, faith or class.” People call the survivors of World War II as the “greatest generation”. For me their greatness was not just about what they did during the war, but afterwards when the war ended and they saw their partners in the war as their neighbors, whether they were of different race, faith or standing in society.
Why can our generation not better control our anger? Let us all take a moment to be grateful for the little things in life. It is much easier to be kind than to be judgmental. Peace to all.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
