¿Cuál es su motivo para migrar?
Hemos visitado a migrantes que buscan asilo en los puertos de entrada a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Mientras reflexiono sobre nuestras conversaciones con los migrantes, una vez que la gente se sintió cómoda con nosotros, afloró el carácter, la fe y la esperanza de los migrantes. Fue fácil entender las presiones que experimentan las personas y la lucha interna que atravesaron antes de decidirse a migrar. En los albergues y centros de servicio, simplemente no nos encontramos con personas enojadas o temerosas. Muchos fueron elocuentes al hablar de sus esperanzas como migrantes.
A la pregunta “¿Cuál es su motivo para migrar?”, todos los migrantes hablaron de desesperación causada por las trágicas condiciones en sus países, o experiencia personal de amenazas a la vida de sus familiares. Otro motivo fuerte fue el reencuentro con familias que ya están en Estados Unidos. Todos los que respondieron sobre sus motivos indicaron que la decisión de emigrar fue una decisión extremadamente difícil de tomar.
Cada migrante tiene su propia historia que contar. Con demasiada frecuencia, las personas hacen generalizaciones sobre los migrantes y sus métodos de llegada a la frontera. Conocimos a algunos que viajaban desde la frontera sur, viajando en los peligrosos trenes, uniéndose a otros migrantes en grupos comúnmente llamados caravanas. Conocimos a algunos que viajaban en una caravana que eran hombres solteros que se encontraron en su viaje. En el camino, cinco jóvenes se hicieron amigos en el camino. Procedían de tres naciones diferentes. Mientras viajaban, se convirtieron en una “banda de hermanos”, cuidándose unos a otros en el camino. Juntos, pudieron protegerse mutuamente de las pandillas.
Mucha gente llega a la frontera por medios ordinarios de viaje en autobús y otros medios de transporte. No importa cómo lleguen a la frontera, los migrantes rara vez viajan solos. Muchos pueden estar con familiares, amigos de su comunidad de origen o establecer lazos estrechos con otras personas a lo largo del viaje, como los cinco mencionados anteriormente. Juntos, se apoyan mutuamente en su dignidad, fe y esperanza.
Me entristece cuántas personas aceptan la imagen negativa que se presenta de los migrantes en los medios de comunicación y en el teatro político. Mi impresión de los inmigrantes que he conocido es que son más como un vecino tratando de salir de situaciones trágicas que como personas de mala voluntad. Ciertamente, hay personas que se han amargado porque su inseguridad continúa. Dado que las dificultades parecen no tener fin, las personas pueden reaccionar a su largo viaje de formas que los hieren en su búsqueda de refugio. Los problemas de la migración son grandes, pero necesitamos ver a Cristo en el rostro del migrante.

What is your motive for migrating?
We have visited migrants seeking asylum at ports of entry along the United States – Mexico border. As I reflect on our conversations with migrants, once people felt comfortable with us, the character, faith and hope of the migrants surfaced. It was easy to understand the pressures people experience and the inner struggle they went through before deciding to migrate. In the shelters and service centers, we simply did not meet angry or fearful people. Many were articulate as they spoke of their hopes as migrants.
To the question, “What is your motive for migration?”, all the migrants spoke of desperation caused by tragic conditions in their countries, or personal experience of threats to the lives of their family members. Another strong motive was to reunite with families that are already in the United States. All of those responding about their motives indicated that the decision to emigrate was an extremely difficult decision to make.
Each migrant has their own story to tell. Too often people make generalizations about migrants and their methods of arrival at the border. We met some who traveled from the southern border, traveling the dangerous trains, joining other migrants in groups commonly called caravans. We met some traveling in a caravan who were single men who met on their journey. Along the way five young men became friends on the journey. They came from three different nations. As they traveled, they became a “band of brothers”, taking care of each other along the way. Together, they were able to protect each other from gangs.
Many people arrive at the border by ordinary means of travel by bus and other transportation. No matter how they arrive at the border, migrants are rarely traveling alone. Many may be with family members, friends from their home community or gaining close ties with others along the journey as the five mentioned above. Together, they support each other in their dignity, faith and hope.
It saddens me how many people accept the negative image presented of migrants in the news media and in the political theatre. My impression of the migrants whom I have met is that they are more like a next-door neighbor trying to rise out of tragic situations than people of bad will. Certainly, there are people who have become bitter as their insecurity continues. As hardship appears to have no end, people may react to their long journey in ways that hurt them in their seeking refuge. The problems of migration are great, but we need to see Christ in the face of the migrant.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
