What is Migrant Ministry?
Someone asked me to describe what I mean when I talk about migrant ministry. He asked, “Exactly, what is migrant ministry?” I said that “IT IS PART TIME WORK, FULL TIME.” Obviously, I had to explain. Many years ago, as I spoke with a Bishop about working with migrants, he said, “You only have the time that God gives you.” His message has meant a lot to me over the years. We do what we can in the time we have with the migrant. Often, I speak of doing “Ministry of the moment.”
In working with migrants, no matter how long they have lived in a place, they do not know where they may be in the next month or so. They may have a new job opportunity, or they may move to be closer to an ailing family member, or they may be deported. In working with migrants, the time for addressing a person’s needs must be done in “the time that God gives us.”
Working in migrant ministry, means being available at the time that the migrant has needs to be met. Working with oil field workers, marriage preparation needed to be done very late in the evening as the workers often had long distances to travel between oil rigs to be serviced. It was not uncommon for meetings with couples planning to marry took place from 9:00 pm to midnight.
Work with migrants individually was “part time work”, but in a community of seasonal workers, it is a full-time ministry. In work with fruit and vegetable workers, there are seasons that offer a window of opportunity to help certain workers, but for other crops, the times may be quite different. Migrant Ministry calls on the worker to be extremely flexible. The key virtue is being available at the time that the worker is available. Invariably, from region to region, and from crop to crop, the best time for ministry responds to the availability of the people. The minister needs to be flexible and willing to sacrifice his or her time for the good of the migrant.
Rewards of the ministry
There is no other ministry, where I experienced more gratitude than amongst people working in seasonal work. So many speak of their relief at finding a priest and his companions so aware of the challenges of migrant worker life. This is doubly true for people who not only work seasonally, but lack immigration status. Having a priest who responds to them in the instability of their lives is sadly not a common experience. Praise to all who sacrifice themselves for people of mobility.
