La bienvenida al extranjero
La Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes (RCCM) busca brindar “bienvenida, protección, defensa e integración de los campesinos migrantes en la Iglesia”. Estas son las prioridades de RCCM para los próximos dos años. Estos objetivos son desafíos dificiles.
Al considerar “dar la bienvenida al extranjero”, el comité de la USCCB para el Cuidado Pastoral de Migrantes, Refugiados y Viajeros (PCMRT) brindó una introducción a la preocupación de la Iglesia por los inmigrantes en un documento emitido el 15 de noviembre de 2000, “Dar la bienvenida al extranjero entre nosotros: Unidad en la Diversidad”. El folleto presenta un contexto para considerar cómo “recibimos al extranjero” dentro de la Iglesia. Hace un llamado a los católicos estadounidenses a recordar nuestra herencia inmigrante y el papel que desempeñó la Iglesia al dar la bienvenida a las generaciones anteriores de inmigrantes. Acoger a los inmigrantes no solo fue una bendición para la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos, sino también para la sociedad.
El documento no solo ofrece un recuerdo de los buenos esfuerzos de la Iglesia para dar la bienvenida a los inmigrantes, sino que también reconoce humildemente nuestros fracasos al dar la bienvenida a los inmigrantes hoy.
Nosotros obispos debemos confesar, también, que los inmigrantes recientes no siempre han encontrado acogida en la Iglesia. Hoy, los inmigrantes de todo tipo enfrentan con demasiada frecuencia prejuicios dentro de la Iglesia. A veces no se ha satisfecho su legítimo deseo de rendir culto en su propio idioma, según sus propias tradiciones. Algunos han sido rechazados por los párrocos o se encuentran con la oposición de miembros de la comunidad parroquial a su petición de una Misa en su propio idioma y una participación en las instalaciones parroquiales. Para aquellos que viven lejos de poblaciones concentradas de personas que comparten su herencia, a menudo no hay otra alternativa que luchar durante la misa en inglés mientras las expresiones más profundas de su espíritu claman en silencio en otro idioma. Donde la Iglesia no ha sido acogedora, muchos han recurrido a otras fuentes de realización comunitaria y religiosa, pero a expensas de abandonar las riquezas de su fe católica y las tradiciones nativas.
Si bien muchas parroquias dan la bienvenida a las comunidades de inmigrantes y brindan culto en varios idiomas, todas nuestras comunidades pueden hacer más. Debemos considerar nuestro ministerio de inmigrantes como un continuo. Nuestras comunidades pueden calificar bien en algunas áreas, pero no tan bien en otras. Necesitamos descubrir primero qué estamos haciendo bien y luego preguntarnos qué podríamos hacer mejor. Siempre sabemos que podemos hacerlo mejor. Que el Señor esté con nosotros.

Welcoming the Stranger
The Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network (CMFN) seeks to provide “welcome, protection, advocacy and integration of migrant farmworkers into the Church.” These are priorities of CMFN for the next two years. These objectives are lofty challenges.
In considering “welcoming the stranger”, the USCCB committee for Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers (PCMRT) provided an introduction to the Church’s concern for migrants in a document issued on November 15, 2000, “Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity”. The booklet was about twenty-five pages, but gratefully, it is now available online at the following site:
The booklet presents a context for consideration of how we “welcome the stranger” within the Church. It calls on American Catholics to remember our immigrant heritage in this country and the role that the Church played in welcoming earlier generations of immigrants. Welcoming immigrants was not only a blessing for the Church in the United States, but also for society.
The document not only offers remembrance of the good efforts of the Church in welcoming immigrants, also there is humble recognition of our failures in welcoming immigrants today.
We bishops must confess, as well, that recent immigrants have not always encountered welcome in the Church. Today immigrants of all sorts too often face prejudice within the Church. At times their legitimate desire to worship in their own language, according to their own traditions, has not been satisfied. Some have been turned away by pastors or find their petition for a Mass in their own language and a share in parish facilities opposed by members of the parish community. For those who live far from concentrated populations of people who share their heritage, there is often no alternative but to struggle through the English Mass while the deepest expressions of their spirit cry out silently in another language. Where the Church has not been welcoming, many have turned to other sources of community and religious fulfillment, but at the expense of abandoning the riches of their Catholic faith and native traditions.
While many parishes do welcome immigrant communities and provide worship in various languages, all of our communities can do more. We should consider our immigrant ministry as on a continuum. Our communities may grade well in some areas, but not so well in others. We need to discover first, what we are doing well, and then ask what we could do better. We always know that we can do better. May the Lord be with us.

We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
