“NO siempre se ha hecho así”
Necesitamos abandonar la actitud que dice: “Siempre se ha hecho así”. (EG. 33) Mi respuesta es: “No. NO siempre se ha hecho así”. Considere los requisitos para el bautismo en muchas parroquias e incluso en las pautas de algunas diócesis. Requerir una clase o clases para padres y padrinos es algo común antes de que un niño sea bautizado. En algunos casos, se requieren clases cada vez que una familia trae a un niño para bautizar, incluso si este es el cuarto o quinto hijo de miembros muy fieles de una parroquia. En algunas parroquias hay otros requisitos que dificultan la participación de personas en movilidad y los pobres.
Estas prácticas NO son como siempre han sido. Soy el mayor de siete hermanos. Le pregunté a mi madre qué tenía que hacer antes de que yo me bautizara en 1947. Ella dijo: “Bueno, el domingo después de que llegaras a casa del hospital, fuimos a misa. Después de la misa, nosotros y otros padres de niños recién nacidos reunimos con el Padre. en el baptisterio. Él tomó nuestra información y usted fue bautizado. Había otros dos bebés bautizados contigo”. Pregunté si mamá y papá tenían una clase de bautismo. “¡No!” No hubo clases antes del bautismo también de mis hermanas y hermanos. Me bauticé en la parroquia de mis abuelos, ni siquiera en la parroquia de mis padres. Si le hubieras preguntado al sacerdote que me bautizó, te habría dicho: “Siempre lo hemos hecho así”.
Hay muchos desarrollos positivos en el ministerio desde el Concilio Vaticano II. Los católicos son más conscientes del estudio de las Escrituras. El desarrollo de líderes laicos profesionales en la fe abre el camino para que muchos participen en un ministerio que alguna vez pareció ser solo el ámbito del clero y las órdenes y comunidades religiosas. Hay desarrollos en el ministerio que surgieron durante la pandemia de COVID que demuestran la creatividad de los enfoques ministeriales. La Iglesia debe permanecer abierta al espíritu de Dios, moviéndonos a responder a las circunstancias cambiantes de la vida. Dejemos que el Espíritu de Dios nos lleve a nuevos métodos, nuevos caminos y nuevas expresiones de fe, porque a menudo debemos decir: “NO siempre se ha hecho así”

We need to abandon the attitude that says: “We have always done it this way.” (EG. 33) My response is, “No. We have NOT always done it this way.” Consider requirements for Baptism in many parishes and even in the guidelines of some dioceses. Requiring a class or classes for parents and godparents is a common before a child is to be baptized. In some cases, classes are required each time a family brings a child to be baptized, even if this is the fourth or fifth child of very faithful members of a parish. In some parishes there are other requirements that hinder the participation of people of mobility and the poor.
These practices are NOT the way it has always been. I am the oldest of seven children. I asked my mother what she had to do before I was baptized in 1947. She said, “Well, the Sunday after you came home from the hospital, we went to Mass. After Mass, we and other parents of newly born infants met Father in the baptistry. He took our information, and you were baptized. There were two other babies baptized with you.” I asked if Mom and Dad had a baptism class. “No!” There were no classes before the baptism my sisters and brothers. I was baptized in the parish of my grandparents, not even the parish of my parents. If you asked the priest who baptized me, he would have said, “We have always done it this way.”
There are many positive developments in ministry since the Second Vatican Council. Catholics are more aware of the study of Scripture. The development of professional lay leaders in faith opens the way for many to participate in ministry that once appeared to be only the realm of clergy and religious orders and communities. There are developments in ministry that arose during the COVID pandemic that demonstrate the creativity of ministerial approaches. The Church needs to remain open to the spirit of God, moving us to respond to the changing circumstances of life. Let us allow the Spirit of God lead us to new methods, new ways and new expression of faith, because often we should say, “We have NOT always done it this way.”
