To evangelize those on the margins

Pope Francis encourages us to evangelize those on the margins of society and the church. It begins with recognizing the marginalized community. There are many reasons people are on the periphery of the Church. Each has their own unique story. Some have been offended within the Church. Some have been offended in the home and in the community. People of trust have discouraged them. Poverty, crisis, desperation and hardships have interrupted contact with supportive communities in the lives of many.

Pope Francis correctly states that: It is not by proselytizing that the Church grows, but “by attraction”. (EG. 15) Before doing anything for those on the periphery, our witness, as people of faith, welcomes the marginalized to the life of faith. It is not by chastising that one is motivated to take an active role in Catholic life. Jesus said that God wants mercy, not sacrifice. The role of parent, godparent, catechist, teacher, youth minister, lay minister, religious or clergy is to attract those on the periphery to Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.

One of the most direct commands Jesus gave to his disciples was, “Do not judge.” (Mt. 7:1) While he said it so directly, it is so commonly part of our lived experience in faith communities, that we spend much energy and time criticizing others. We appear to seldom reflect on the damage done by our judgements of others, especially the poor. We need to recognize the “other” as a child of God. We need to honor them, respect them and treat them as children of God. Then we will see them wanting to be part of our church communities.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
