Timeliness of ministry / “El tiempo que Dios nos da”
Frecuentemente, hablo de nuestra misión sacramental durante la cosecha de cerezas en Oregón. Durante los próximos días, consideraré tres características importantes de esa misión: el tiempo que Dios nos da, consistencia y duración.
“El tiempo que Dios nos da”
La cosecha de cerezas en The Dalles, Oregón, comienza en junio y finaliza la última semana de julio o principios de agosto. Por los años 2000 a 2010, ofrecimos una misión sacramental que incluía ofrecer Bautismos de niños, Primera Comunión, Confirmación y varios matrimonios. Nuestro equipo estaba formado por un sacerdote, unos seminaristas y laicos voluntarios en misión. Tuvimos que ser flexibles con las fechas en que llegaríamos a Oregón para la misión. En marzo, les preguntaba a algunos de los orchardistas cuándo esperaban que llegaran sus trabajadores para la cosecha. Cuando los árboles comenzaron a florecer, pudieron estimar cuándo comenzaría la cosecha. La fecha de inicio podría fluctuar hasta diez días dependiendo de la dureza del invierno.
Cuando los orchardistas planificaron la llegada de los trabajadores, podríamos planificar nuestra llegada y cuándo podríamos poner las fechas de la Primera Eucaristía y la Confirmación en el calendario parroquial. Nuestro equipo misionero necesitó de una semana a diez días para visitar los campamentos de migrantes registrando a los niños en nuestros programas y dando las noticias sobre nuestro programa. Planeamos tener clases de lunes a viernes, durante dos semanas.
Nuestros primeros dos años, solo preparamos a niños y jóvenes para la Primera Comunión. También tuvimos varios bautizos. Después del primer verano, le dijimos a la gente que volveríamos el año siguiente y que podían contarles a otros sobre el programa. Alentamos a las personas a que trajeran los certificados de bautismo de sus hijos que recibirían los sacramentos el año siguiente ya informar e invitar a otros trabajadores, que no habían oído hablar de nuestra misión, al programa del próximo año.
El segundo año, el obispo Robert Vasa de la Diócesis de Baker invitó a nuestro equipo misionero a almorzar con él. Preguntó si podía celebrar las Primeras Comuniones al año siguiente. Le dije que la gente se alegraría mucho si venía. Luego preguntó las edades de los niños en el programa. Ese año había 70 alumnos, y casi la mitad tenían entre 14 y 18 años. Luego el obispo dijo que también deberían ser confirmados. Le dije que solo teníamos dos semanas para la clase, y él respondió: “Solo tienes el tiempo que Dios te da. Tú les enseñas y yo voy a confirmarlos”.
Al abordar las necesidades especiales de las personas de movilidad, su mensaje guio nuestro ministerio durante los años siguientes y me ha confirmado en mi trabajo con los migrantes desde ahora. “Solo tienes el tiempo que Dios te da”. Cuando alguien pide la gracia del sacramento, debemos considerar la disponibilidad de las personas involucradas en la preparación sacramental y ser generosos al dar la bienvenida a los sacramentos a las personas que tienen un tiempo limitado por su trabajo.

I frequently talk about our sacramental mission during the cherry harvest in Oregon. Over the next few days, I will consider three important characteristics of that mission: timeliness, consistency and duration.
Timeliness of ministry
The cherry harvest in The Dalles, Oregon begins in June and ends by the last week of July or early in August. From 2000 to 2010, we offered a sacramental mission that included offering Baptisms of children, First Communion, Confirmation and several marriages. Our team consisted of a priest, seminarians and lay volunteers in mission. We had to be flexible about the dates that we would arrive in Oregon for the mission. In March, I would ask some of the orchardists when they anticipated having their workers arrive for the harvest. When the trees began to flower, they could estimate when the harvest would begin. The beginning date could fluctuate as much as ten days depending on the harshness of the winter.
Once the orchardists planned for the arrival of the workers, we could plan on our arrival and when we could put the dates for First Eucharist and Communion on the parish calendar. Our mission team needed a week to ten days to visit migrant camps to register children for our programs and to spread the news about our program. We planned on having classes from Monday to Friday, every day for two weeks.
Our first two years, we only prepared children and youth for First Communion. We also had several baptisms. After the first summer, we told people that we would return the following year, and they could tell others about the program. We encouraged people to bring baptismal certificates of their children who would receive the sacraments the following year and to inform and invite other workers who did not hear about our mission to the next year’s program.
The second year, Bishop Robert Vasa of the Diocese of Baker invited our mission team to have lunch with him. He asked if he could celebrate the First Communions the following year. I told him that the people would be very happy if he came. He then asked the ages of the children in the program. That year there were 70 students, and nearly half were between 14 and 18 years old. He then said that they should also be confirmed. I told him that we only had two weeks for the class, and he responded, “You only have the time that God gives you. You teach them and I will confirm them.”
When addressing special needs of people of mobility, his message guided our ministry over the following years, and has influenced my work with migrants ever since. “You only have the time that God gives you.” When someone asks for the grace of sacrament, we need to consider the availability of the people involved in sacramental preparation and be generous in welcoming people who have limited time in a community to the sacraments.
