The Body and Blood of Christ / El Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo

The Body and Blood of Christ
On this day there are several messages conveyed in the liturgy of Holy Thursday. Jesus took bread and wine, proclaiming that it is his body and blood. While theologians may argue about how to explain this mystery, we are left with the choice to profess our faith in Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist or to not believe. As a youth questioning my belief in Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist, a confessor asked, “What do you want to believe?” I responded, “I want to believe that everything that the Church teaches is true.” He told me to not stop going to communion, and that when I approached the altar at Mass for Communion, I should repeat the phrase of a man asking Christ to heal his son. The man said, “Lord, I do believe, help my unbelief.” For two weeks I repeated that phrase many times as I approached for Communion, and on my way back to my pew after Communion. Two weeks later the priest asked, “How are you doing with your doubts?” I asked, “What doubts?” I found peace by choosing to believe in the mystery of the Eucharist.
