No haya divisiones entre ustedes
Este fin de semana, en la segunda lectura de la Misa, San Pablo se dirige a su amado pueblo de Corinto. Escribió más a los corintios que a cualquier otra comunidad. Sus cartas fueron probablemente varias cartas de Pablo a la comunidad, condensadas en dos para nuestras Escrituras. La comunidad de Corinto tuvo un lugar especial entre las comunidades que él estableció. Era un grupo luchador de creyentes. Recibieron más de su instrucción sobre cómo ser una comunidad de creyentes. Necesitaban más corrección, pero como un ‘niño travieso’ que es adorable incluso cuando causa problemas, Paul llama a su mejor yo.
Escribió: “Los exhorto, en nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo … que no haya divisiones entre ustedes”. En su tiempo, la comunidad se dividió entre los que decían “yo soy de” Pablo, Apolos, Pedro o Cristo. Hoy vivimos con tantas divisiones. Tenemos divisiones en comunidades de fe como Corinto. Tenemos divisiones dentro de nuestras familias. Las naciones están divididas unas de otras. Y dentro de las naciones la gente está dividida por partidos, estados y actitudes.
Escuchamos las palabras de Pablo, “que no divisiones entre ustedes”, y expresan lo que queremos en nuestro corazón, pero tan pronto como salimos de nuestras iglesias, o de nuestros hogares, o de nuestras escuelas y lugares de trabajo, nos encontramos todas las cosas que nos dividen. San Pablo exhorta a los corintios a centrar todas nuestras acciones en hacer presente a Cristo a través de las formas en que vivimos juntos como comunidad de fe. Debemos ser testigos de la unidad en medio de todas las personas que nos rodean. En un mundo que pierde la fe en la posibilidad de la unidad, estamos llamados a ser testigos de la unidad que se encuentra en Jesús.
En el evangelio de este fin de semana, Jesús llama a los pescadores a seguirlo y se convertirán en “pescadores de hombres”. Necesitamos aprender a poner en acción nuestra fe cuando nos perturban las injusticias que nos rodean. Es fácil envolvernos en ira por las injusticias, tanto que no logramos suavizar esas injusticias para tantos que no tienen adónde ir.
Migrantes, refugiados y todas las personas en movilidad necesitan nuestro acompañamiento en el camino de la vida. Nuestro mensaje debe ser más que palabras y doctrina, debe ser una voluntad genuina de caminar juntos en los buenos tiempos y en las luchas. Jesús invitó a los pescadores: “Síganme”. Que todos lo sigamos y seamos pescadores de hombres.

This weekend, in the second reading of the Mass, St. Paul addresses his beloved people of Corinth. He wrote more to the Corinthians than to any other community. His letters were probably several letters of Paul to the community, condensed into two for our Scriptures. The community of Corinth had a special place amongst the communities that he established. They were a feisty group of believers. They received more of his instruction on how to be a community of believers. They needed more correction, but like a ‘mischievous child’ who is loveable even when causing trouble, Paul calls on their better self.
He wrote, “I urge you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ … that there be no divisions among you.” In their time, the community divided among those who said, “I belong to” Paul, Apollos, Cephas or Christ. Today we live with so many divisions. We have divisions in faith communities like Corinth. We have divisions within our families. Nations are divided one from another. And within nations people are divided by parties, states and attitudes.
We hear the words of Paul, “that there be no divisions among you”, and they express what we want in our hearts, but as soon as we leave our churches, or our homes, or our schools and places of work, we encounter all the things that divide us. St. Paul exhorts the Corinthians to focus all of our actions on making Christ present by the ways that we live together as a community of faith. We are to be witnesses of unity in the midst of all people around us. In a world that loses faith in the possibility of unity, we are called to be witnesses to the unity that is found in Jesus.
In the gospel for this weekend, Jesus calls on the fishermen to follow Him and they would become “fishers of men.” We need to learn how to call our faith into action when we are disturbed by the injustices around us. It is easy to wrap ourselves in anger at the injustices, so much so that we fail to soften those injustices for so many who have nowhere to go.
Migrants, refugees, and all people of mobility need our accompaniment along the journey of life. Our message must be more than words and doctrine, but must be a genuine willingness to walk with each other in the good times and in the struggles. Jesus invited the fishermen, “Come after me.” May we all follow, and be fishers of men.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
