Modern mobility has an impact on many aspects of life in the United States. The principal of one grade school, recognizing the immigrant community in her town said that eleven different languages were spoken in the homes of the nearly 250 students in the school. English as a Second Language programs were needed for nearly forty percent of the students. Another school studied the mobility of families. It found that only 17% of the students who began first grade in the school were present in the same school district by fifth grade. Both principals were not bemoaning the difficulties of teaching their students. They were excited about the creativity of teachers and parents in their schools responding to the challenges. They adapted to the situations of the day.
Religious education and sacramental preparation programs need to keep the mobility of families today in mind as norms and guidelines are made for the reception of Eucharist and Confirmation. Instead of having one program for preparing children for sacraments, parishes need to be creative in preparing young people for receiving the sacraments. It is important to try new methods, new ways of preparing the children.
Creative ways of involving parents and god parents in the preparation of the children can provide healthy ways to bring more children into sacramental participation in the Church. At the time of the Baptism of a child, parents are asked if they are ready to accept the responsibility of training the child in the ways of faith. The parents always say yes. We need to offer parents help in fulfilling their responsibility without taking the responsibility away from them.
When parents believe that the priest trusts them to teach their children how to pray and pay attention to God in their lives, the parents will take that responsibility to heart. The home is where the best religious formation takes place, and the best teachers in the home are the parents. The role of the priest, religious leaders in a parish is to help the parents teach the faith to their children.
