“El que es fiel en las cosas pequeñas,
también es fiel en las grandes”
En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús llama a sus seguidores a ser dignos de confianza en su servicio a Dios. Él está hablando de nuestra relación con Dios. En la sociedad, muchas relaciones son “transaccionales”. Ese no es la manera de la enseñanza de Jesús acerca de la relación con Dios. Honestamente, la parábola del mayordomo infiel me parece un poco confusa, pero en la explicación hay consuelo.
¿Qué es una relación “transaccional”? Es una relación basada en “¿qué hay para mí?” Es un concepto comercial de relación. “Hago esto por ti y tú me pagas por ello”. El trabajo es vale la pena el pago, y uno obtiene valor de la relación. El ejemplo de Jesús de una relación transaccional deshonesta es un marcado contraste con la forma en que queremos. Es en la sorpresa del mensaje, que Jesús deja en claro que nuestra relación con Dios no es una típica relación humana.
Nuestra relación con Dios es espiritual, no transaccional. Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que el siervo digno de confianza es el que se entrega a Dios en todos los asuntos, incluso en los más pequeños. El siervo de confianza es el que busca una relación con Dios. El motivo de la deshonestidad del sirviente infiel fue cuidar de sí mismo cuando sería despedido de su trabajo. No es el método de obtener una relación que Jesús alaba. Tan emprendedor como el siervo infiel fue a su crimen, Jesús quiere que el discípulo sea emprendedor en la relación con Dios.
Confianza y migración
Es difícil hablar sobre nuestro estudio sobre la migración en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. La conversación queda atrapada en argumentos políticos. Hay tanto resentimiento hacia los migrantes e inmigrantes alimentado por la ira, el miedo, el resentimiento y la desinformación. Quiero encontrar formas de hablar de los migrantes y los inmigrantes desde la fe y la verdad. Consideremos la diferencia de buscar una relación ‘espiritual’ y una relación ‘transaccional’ con Dios.
Los temas ‘transaccionales’ de la migración tienen que ver con leyes, estadísticas, economía, injusticia, violencia, pobreza y victimización. Estos temas crean una comprensión fea y temerosa de la migración. Una consideración ‘espiritual’ del migrante llega a conocer los valores, la dignidad, la fe y la bondad de la persona. Esa relación surge cuando se habla con los migrantes durante una comida o en un entorno informal. Viene en escuchar a las personas, que no son estadísticas, sino nuestros hermanos y hermanas de carne y hueso que buscan una vida amorosa.
Durante los cinco meses que he visto la frontera, la gente en campamentos, albergues y centros de servicio, me han enseñado los cuidadores, las autoridades, los abogados y los propios migrantes. Hay mucho que decir sobre los temas transaccionales de la migración, pero lo más importante es que he caminado con los migrantes. No sé cómo hacer avanzar los temas transaccionales de la migración, pero creo plenamente que necesitamos llegar a conocer al migrante como hijo de Dios, como nuestro prójimo, como nuestro hermano y hermana. El migrante no es un problema para resolver, sino una persona a ser comprendida y amada.

Trustworthy
“The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones”
In today’s gospel, Jesus calls on his followers to be trust-worthy in their service of God. He is speaking of our relationship with God. In society, many relationships are “transactional”. That is not the way of Jesus’ teaching about relationship with God. Honestly, I find the parable of the unfaithful steward a bit confusing, but in the explanation, there is comfort.
What is a “transactional” relationship”? It is a relationship based on “what is in it for me?” It is a business concept of relationship. “I do this for you, and you pay me for it.” The work is worth the pay, and one gets value from the relationship. Jesus’ example of a dishonest transactional relationship is a stark contrast to the way we want things to be. It is in the shock of his story that Jesus makes it clear that our relationship with God is not a typical human relationship.
Our relationship with God is spiritual, not transactional. Jesus tells his disciples that the trustworthy servant is the one who gives himself to God in all matters, even the smallest of matters. The trustworthy servant is the one who seeks a relationship with God. The motivation for the dishonesty of the unfaithful servant was to take care of himself when he would be fired from his job. It is not the method of gaining a relationship that Jesus praises. As enterprising as the unfaithful servant was to his crime, Jesus wants the disciple to be enterprising in relationship with God.
Trust and migration
It is difficult talking with people about our study about migration on the United States / Mexico border. The conversation gets trapped into political arguments. There is so much resentment of migrants and immigrants fueled by anger, fear, resentment and misinformation. I want to find ways of talking about migrants and immigrants based on faith and truth. Let us consider the difference of seeking a ‘spiritual’ relationship and a ‘transactional’ relationship with God.
The ‘transactional’ issues of migration have to do with laws, statistics, economics, injustice, violence, poverty and victimization. Such issues create a very unattractive and fearful understanding of migration. A ‘spiritual’ consideration of the migrant gets to know the values, the dignity, the faith and the goodness of the person. That relationship comes when talking with migrants over a meal, or in an informal setting. It comes in listening to people, who are not statistics, but our flesh and blood brothers and sisters seeking a loving life.
For five months, I have seen the border, the people in camps, shelters and service centers. I have been taught by the caregivers, the authorities, the lawyers and the migrants themselves. There is much to say about the transactional issues of migration, but most importantly I have walked with them migrants. I do not know how to move the transactional issues of migration forward, but I fully believe that we need to come to know the migrant as a child of God, as our neighbor, as our brother and sister. The migrant is not a problem to be solved, but a person to be understood and loved.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
