Conocer la lucha
Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Miguel. Crecimos con la oración, “San Miguel, defiéndenos en la lucha”. Si bien la oración a San Miguel gana popularidad en tiempos de guerra. En inglés decimos, defiéndenos “in the battle” pero es más claro en español, “en la lucha”. Queremos defensa más que una batalla, pero queremos la presencia de San Miguel en toda la lucha. Una batalla es un momento en una guerra, pero oramos para que podamos vivir fielmente a través de todas las luchas que enfrentamos en la vida.
A menudo cito a mi amigo, el P. Enrique López contándome la importancia de conocer las luchas de los hispanos. Jesús no solo conocía las luchas de los pecadores, sino que entró en una relación con los pecadores. Los fariseos criticaron a Jesús preguntando a los discípulos: “¿Por qué come con los cobradores de impuestos y los pecadores?” (Marcos 2:16) El conocimiento de Jesús de los pecadores no fue un conocimiento académico, sino que surgió de la voluntad de caminar con los pobres, los marginados, los cojos, los ciegos y especialmente con los pecadores. Entró en la lucha.
He escrito a menudo sobre la iniciativa juvenil redentorista de Casa San Alfonso de 1991 a 1996. En esa comunidad, caminamos con la gente en la lucha de vivir en un barrio pobre. El éxito de CSA no se realizaba en grandes logros, sino en ganar el reconocimiento de las personas marginadas de que estábamos presentes en la lucha. Muchas veces enfrentamos la injusticia y el desánimo, pero quedamos en la lucha. La gente de Israel conoció Cristo en la lucha por su presencia. La cruz es un signo de lucha y la resurrección es la promesa de la recompensa de la fe. Sin embargo, Jesús solo nos mostró la recompensa al tomar la cruz.

To know the struggle
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Michael. We grew up with the prayer, “Saint Michael, defend us in battle.” Although the prayer to San Miguel gains popularity in times of war. In English we say, “defend us in battle” but it is clearer in Spanish, “defiendenos en la lucha.” (defend us in the struggle) A battle is one moment in a war, but we pray that we may be protected in the struggle to live faithfully through all the temptations and struggles that we face in life.
I often quote my friend, Fr. Enrique Lopez telling me of the importance of knowing the struggles of Hispanic people. Jesus did not simply know the struggles of sinners, he entered into a relationship with sinners. The Pharisees criticized Jesus asking the disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” (Mk. 2:16) Jesus’ knowledge of the sinners was not an academic knowledge, but arose from a willingness to walk with the poor, the marginalized, the lame, the blind and especially with sinners. He entered their struggles.
I have written often about the Redemptorist youth initiative of Casa San Alfonso from 1991 to 1996. In that community, we walked with people in many of the struggles of life in a poor barrio. Our successes were not to be measured in great achievements, but in gaining the recognition of marginalized people that we were there with them. There were many times that we encountered injustice and discouragement, but by being in the struggle, people could recognize the presence of Christ in the struggle. The cross is a sign of the struggle, and the resurrection is the promise of the reward of faith. Yet, Jesus only showed us the reward by taking on the cross.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
