Como sacerdote en mi quincuagésimo año de sacerdocio, he escuchado a personas que tuercen la verdad, justifican acciones descarriadas, culpan a otros por sus propias faltas y mienten abiertamente. He trabajado con alcohólicos, adictos y personas atrapadas en situaciones y relaciones abusivas. Mientras alguien trabaja en el ministerio, consejería, servicios sociales y muchas carreras interactivas, el desánimo es común. Podemos volvernos hastiados.
Hace cinco años, un estado sacó a todos sus prisioneros de una gran prisión en Mississippi. La prisión buscaba presos de otros estados. La mitad de la población carcelaria eran criminales condenados. Para alcanzar su máxima capacidad, la prisión comenzó a albergar inmigrantes detenidos para ICE. Los detenidos eran de todo el mundo. Después de varios meses, uno de los guardias dijo: “Padre, he trabajado con criminales durante veinte años, pero esta gente no es criminal. No sé cómo tratarlos”. Su observación me impresionó en ese momento, pero ha adquirido un nuevo significado durante los cinco meses que he estado estudiando la situación fronteriza del norte de México.
Habiendo visitado a los migrantes a lo largo de la frontera durante los últimos cinco meses, entiendo que el guardia de la prisión vea una falta de malicia en los migrantes. En medio de los inmensos desafíos que presenta la presencia de migrantes en las comunidades fronterizas, estoy experimentando una inocencia y un espíritu entre los migrantes que no esperaba. He sido un defensor de los migrantes durante mucho tiempo, pero nuestros encuentros con los migrantes, escuchándolos, caminando con ellos, estoy tomando conciencia de la extraordinaria humildad, inocencia y esperanza de algunas personas en movilidad.
Nuestras visitas son informales. Nuestra visita a los migrantes es diferente a brindarles comida, albergue, atención médica y asesoramiento. Más que ofrecer un servicio religioso, estamos presentes para escuchar, aprender y afirmar a las personas en su dignidad. Nadie habla de la migración como una experiencia espiritual. Sé que mis observaciones sobre los migrantes en los últimos cinco meses son anecdóticas. Se basan en numerosos momentos informales con migrantes. Debe haber algo purificador en llegar a la decisión de dejar el país de origen para buscar la vida en otro lugar. Reconozco que la inocencia y la falta de malicia pueden estar pasando como puedo atestiguar por años de trabajo con inmigrantes en los EE. UU.
La inocencia de la que hablo se ve dentro de la seguridad de los refugios. Esta es particularmente la experiencia en albergues bien administrados que ofrecen servicios integrales para migrantes que incluyen servicios médicos, psicológicos, legales y sociales junto con alimentos, ropa y albergue. Es en tales centros que se siente paz, seguridad, esperanza y fe. Puede haber una experiencia purificadora en la falta de control en la propia vida. Escuchar a la gente compartir su esperanza de una vida mejor que no se deja intimidar por las dificultades del viaje, me hace humilde al darme cuenta de la bendición de acoger a Jesús en el migrante.

Spiritual awakening of migrants
As a priest in my fiftieth year of priesthood, I have listened to people who bend the truth, justify wayward actions, blame others for their own faults and lie openly. I have worked with alcoholics, addicts and people caught up in abusive situations and relationships. While working in ministry, counseling, social services, and many interactive careers, discouragement is common. We can become jaded.
Five years ago, a state pulled all of its prisoners out of a large prison in Mississippi. The prison sought prisoners from other states. Half of the prison population were convicted criminals. To attain full capacity the prison began to hold migrant detainees for ICE. The detainees were from all over the world. After several months one of the guards said, “Father, I have worked with criminals for twenty years, but these folks are not criminals. I don’t know how to treat them.” His observation impressed me at the time, but has taken on new meaning over the five months that I have been studying the border situation of northern Mexico.
Having visited migrants all along the border for the past five months, I understand the prison guard seeing a lack of malice in migrants. In the midst of the immense challenges that the presence of migrants presents to border communities, I am experiencing an innocence and spirit among the migrants that I did not expect. I have been an advocate for migrants for a long time, but our meetings with migrants, listening to them, walking with them, I am gaining an awareness of the extraordinary humility, innocence and hope of people of mobility.
Our visits are informal. Our visiting with migrants is different than providing food, shelter, health care and counsel. Rather than offer religious service, we are present to listen, to learn and to affirm people in their dignity. No one speaks of migration as a spiritual experience. I know that my observations about migrants over the past five months is anecdotal. They are based on numerous informal moments with migrants. There must be something purifying in arriving at a decision to leave one’s country of origin to seek life elsewhere. I recognize that the innocence and lack of malice may be passing as I can attest from years of working with immigrants in the U.S.
The innocence that I speak of is seen within the safety of shelters. This is particularly the experience in well run shelters that offer comprehensive services for migrants that includes medical, psychological, legal and social services along with food, clothing and shelter. It is in such centers that one sense peace, security, hope and faith. There may be a purifying experience in the lack of control in one’s life. Listening to the people share their hope for a better life that is undeterred by the hardships of the journey, humbles me as I realize the blessing of welcoming Jesus in the migrant.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
