Seeing things differently

Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. (Ph 2:5)

Sometimes when preaching, I prepare homilies and they are inspired by one of the readings more than the other readings. Sometimes during the Mass, one of the other readings grabs my attention. While I was not going to reflect on the second reading, as it was proclaimed by a very good lector, the above phrase distracted me for a moment from my planned homily. “Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus.” Often in the past I have asked the rather popular question, “What would Jesus do?” I need to pause a moment as I should not focus so much on what Jesus may do as to try to unite myself with his “attitude”. I need to see things as Jesus does, reflect on those circumstances and seek to respond with his passion and care.

The question that I ask migrants who have left a foreign country is “what motivated you to leave your country of origin?” The response migrants give to this question is always a little deeper than whey one simply asks “why?”

Paul tells us to have the “same attitude” as Jesus. Jesus was unlike the priests and Pharisee leaders of his time. They judged people. They criticized people. They condemned people. Their actions were because their attitudes were misguided. They lack compassion, understanding and love. Jesus attitude is shown in his responses that so surprised people of his time. He touched the lepers, he ate and drank with tax collectors, prostitutes, fishermen, Samaritans, and the outcasts of his time. He showed an attitude of compassion, understanding and love. He entered dialogue with people who disagreed with him, and he never had a harsh word for a poor person.

We need to develop the “same attitude” of Jesus. It is easy with those we love and with those whom we agree, but the same attitude Jesus had for those whom he loved, he had for the poor and the sinner. It is good for us to do what Jesus would do, but more important is that we seek the “same attitude” or Jesus. Peace be with you.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
