Santos de la Cristiada
Hubo ejecuciones de algunos sacerdotes y muchos más miembros laicos de la fe católica durante la Cristiada. La mayoría de las ejecuciones tuvieron lugar entre 1927 y 1929. Me gustaría llamar la atención sobre tres de ellas.
Beato Miguel Pro
José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro-Juárez, nacido el 13 de enero de 1891 – ejecutado el 23 de noviembre de 1927, era un sacerdote jesuita mexicano. Ingresó al noviciado jesuita en 1911. El programa de formación jesuita se trasladó a Los Gatos, California en 1914 y se fue a estudiar a España en 1915. Enseñó en Nicaragua desde 1919 hasta 1921. Regresó a Europa para realizar estudios teológicos. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1925 y regresó a México en 1926.
A medida que aumentaba la persecución de la Iglesia, celebró misas en secreto. Era conocido por ser un maestro de los disfraces, ya que evitó la atención del gobierno durante un tiempo. Fue arrestado por soldados el 22 de noviembre de 1927. Al día siguiente se negó a ponerse una venda en los ojos y se enfrentó a sus verdugos. Levantó los brazos imitando a Cristo crucificado diciendo: “¡Que Dios tenga misericordia de ustedes! ¡Que Dios les bendiga! ¡Con todo mi corazón perdono a mis enemigos!” Mientras el pelotón de fusilamiento se preparaba para disparar, levantó los brazos y gritó: “Viva Cristo Rey”.
San Toribio Romo
Toribio Romo González, nacido el 16 de abril de 1900 de campesinos, Juana González y Patricio Romo. Ingresó al seminario a los 13 años. Fue ordenado sacerdote el 23 de diciembre 1922. Se le concedió una dispensa para ser ordenado a los 22 años. Ofreció catequesis a los pobres y después de una revolución en protesta de los edictos anticatólicos del presidente Calles en 1926, se hizo itinerante en su ministerio, cumpliendo su ministerio en secreto contra la persecución del gobierno de Calles. En las primeras horas del 25 de febrero de 1928, las tropas irrumpieron en su dormitorio. Un soldado gritó: “¡Aquí está el sacerdote, mátalo!” Mientras le disparaban, cayó en los brazos de su hermana, y ella gritó: “¡Ánimo Padre Toribio! ¡Cristo Misericordioso recíbelo! ¡Viva Cristo Rey!”
Beato Anacleto González Flores
Anacleto González Flores, nacido el 13 de julio de 1888, era un abogado laico católico. Fue líder activista de la Asociación Católica de la Juventud Mexicana. Fue el fundador y presidente de la Unión Popular (UP), una unión de católicos que resisten la persecución de la Iglesia. Abogó por la resistencia pasiva, instando a la gente a resistir los artículos anticatólicos de la Constitución mexicana de 1917. Fue torturado antes de ser ejecutado por un pelotón de fusilamiento el 1 de abril de 1927.
Celebrando la fiesta de Cristo Rey
Los honrados por la Iglesia como santos fueron solo una pequeña parte de los ejecutados durante las persecuciones del presidente Calles. Al celebrar esta fiesta, reconozcamos que los desafíos del nacionalismo y el secularismo que motivaron al Papa Pío XI a instituir esta fiesta, todavía nos desafían hoy.

There were executions of some priests and many more lay members of the Catholic faith during the Cristiada. Most of the executions took place from 1927 to 1929. I would like to call attention to three of them.
Blessed Miguel Pro
José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, born January 13, 1891 – executed November 23, 1927, was a Mexican Jesuit priest. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1911. The Jesuit formation program moved to Los Gatos, California in 1914 and he went to study in Spain in 1915. He taught in Nicaragua from 1919 to 1921. He returned to Europe for theological studies. He was ordained in 1925 and returned to Mexico in 1926.
As the persecution of the Church increased, he celebrated Masses in secret. He was known for being a master of disguises as he avoided attention from the government for a time. He was arrested by soldiers on November 22, 1927. The next day he declined having a blindfold and faced his executioners. He raised his arms in imitation of Christ crucified saying, “May God have mercy on you! May God bless you! With all my heart I forgive my enemies!” As the firing squad prepared to shoot, he raised his arms and shouted, “Viva Cristo Rey”.
Saint Toribio Romo
Toribio Romo González, born April 16, 1900 to peasant farmers, Juana González and Patricio Romo. He entered the seminary at age 13. He was ordained December 23, 1922. He was granted a dispensation to be ordained at age 22. He offered catechesis to the poor and after a revolt in protest of the anti-clerical edicts of President Calles in 1926, he became itinerant in his ministry, doing his ministry in secret against the persecution by the Calles government. In the early hours of February 25, 1928, troops broke into his bedroom. A soldier shouted, “Here is the priest, kill him!” As he was shot, he fell into the arms of his sister, and she cried out, “Courage Padre Toribio. Merciful Christ receive him! Viva Cristo Rey!”
Blessed Anacleto González Flores
Anacleto González Flores, born July 13, 1888 – executed April 1, 1927, was a Catholic lawyer. He was an activist leader of the Catholic Association of Mexican Youth. He was the founder and president of the Popular Union (UP), a union of Catholics resisting the persecution of the Church. He advocated passive resistance, urging people to resist the anti-Catholic articles of the Mexican Constitution of 1917. He was tortured before being executed by firing squad on April 1, 1927.
Celebrating the Feast of Christ, the King
Those honored by the Church as saints were only a small portion of those executed during the persecutions of President Calles. As we celebrate this feast, let us recognize that the challenges of nationalism and secularism that motivated Pope Pius XI to institute this feast, still challenge us today.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
