Santos entre nosotros – los niños
Jesús dijo: “Dejen que los niños vengan a mí, porque el reino de Dios es de quienes son como ellos”. (Mt. 19:14, Mc. 10:14) En Marcos, continúa diciendo, “el que no acepta el reino de Dios como un niño, no entrará en él”. (Mc. 10:15)
Durante los últimos días, el Padre Migrante ha estado considerando a los santos de nuestra fe que han sido reconocidos por la Iglesia como modelos de fe para todas las generaciones. Se ha reconocido a los santos cuyas acciones, conocidas solo en sus comunidades y familias, inspiran audacia y creatividad al testificar la fe. Inspírate hoy en los pequeños a quienes Jesús nos dice que imitemos, “el que no acepta el reino de Dios como un niño, no entrará en él“.
En 2011, varios seminaristas y catequistas laicos prepararon a 43 niños de la comunidad de Allensworth, California para recibir su Primera Comunión. Durante dos semanas, los niños se reunieron para las clases a las 6:00 pm en una arena de rodeo primitiva. Hacía calor y estaba polvoriento. Cada día la temperatura rondaba los 100 grados. Los niños tenían de 7 a 14 años. Los catequistas tenían que ser creativos no solo en la enseñanza sin aulas y sin muchos materiales didácticos. Tenían que mantener a los niños a salvo trasladándolos a cualquier lugar donde hubiera sombra y proporcionándoles agua.
La alegría de los niños fue una constante y su energía no fue desafiada por las condiciones extremas de los días. Cuando llegó el día de la Primera Comunión, lo celebramos a la sombra de una carpa. Los niños se acercaron a la Eucaristía con reverencia. Después de la ceremonia hubo celebraciones familiares en todo el pueblo. Era medianoche antes de que terminaran las fiestas.
Seis meses después, la comunidad celebró la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Mariachi tocó para la Misa. Después de que terminó la Misa, uno de los mariachis dijo: “Padre, he estado tocando para las Misas durante veinticinco años. Nunca había visto niños tan reverentes recibir la comunión como aquí”.
Nuestro programa de Primera Comunión en Allensworth fue con niños migrantes pobres, en un entorno extraordinariamente duro para las clases, pero los niños y sus catequistas demostraron por qué Jesús dijo: “el que no acepta el reino de Dios como un niño, no entrará en él”.

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Mt. 19:14, Mk. 10:14) In Mark, he goes on to say, “whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” (Mk. 10:15)
For the past few days, Padre Migrante has been considering the Saints of our faith who have been recognized by Church as models of faith for all generations. There has been recognition of the saints whose actions known only in their communities and families inspire boldness and creativity in witnessing the faith. Today, let us be inspired by the little ones whom Jesus tells us to imitate, “whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”
In 2011, several seminarians and lay catechists prepared 43 children in the community of Allensworth, California to receive their First Communion. For two weeks the children gathered for classes at 6:00 pm at a primitive rodeo arena. It was hot and dusty. Each day temperatures hovered at 100 degrees. The children were from 7 to 14 years old. The catechists had to be creative not just in teaching without classrooms and many teaching supplies. They had to keep children safe by moving children to wherever there was shade and provide them with water.
The joy of the children was a constant and their energy was unchallenged by the extreme conditions of the days. When the day of First Communion arrived, we celebrated in the shade of a tent. The children approached the sacrament with reverence. After the ceremony there were family celebrations all over the town. It was midnight before the fiestas ended.
Six months later, the community celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mariachi played for the Mass. After the Mass was over, one of the mariachis said, “Father, I have been playing for Masses for twenty-five years. I have never seen children so reverent receiving communion as here.”
Our First Communion program in Allensworth was with poor migrant children, in an extraordinarily harsh setting for the classes, but the children and their catechists demonstrated why Jesus said, “whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
