Noticias Tristes

Sad News

Yesterday morning, I received a message from one of my cousins. “Did you know Bishop David O’Connell? Sounds like a guy you would know.” Bishop David O’Connell was murdered over the weekend. He was known as a “peacemaker”, for his work within immigrant and black communities. I did not know him personally, but I know many people whom he touched in his ministry. Their sorrow at his death make me wish that I had known him.

We grieve as a church all loss of life. It is shocking when such loss of life happens to a church leader by murder. A week ago, we read in the gospel at Mass, “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, you shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” and this Sunday we read, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

As faithful people, we grieve the loss of a witness to peace and justice, especially by way of murder. We may want to strike out at whoever murdered Bishop O’Connell, but we know that would not be his way. It is not the way of Christ, who on the cross prayed to the Father to forgive those who crucified him.

Our faith is tested by violence. Pray for Bishop David O´Connell. May we do as Jesus told us, pray for those who violate us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
