Conocido como Thibs en nuestro tiempo en el seminario, el P. Richard Thibodeau, C.Ss.R. era amigo de todos nosotros. Como muchos Redentoristas lo recuerdan, deseo contar cómo su apoyo fue fundamental para la fundación de Casa San Alfonso en 1991. Fue nuestra iniciativa Redentorista de Casa San Alfonso, la que me introdujo a mi ministerio con los migrantes e inmigrantes.
Recientemente le pedí a nuestro archivero redentorista documentos sobre la fundación de Casa San Alfonso. Me sorprendió el tamaño de los archivos que me envió sobre la iniciativa. La idea de fundar una iniciativa redentorista en la pastoral juvenil comenzó con un documento de nuestro Superior General en 1988. Se realizaron varios encuentros juveniles en muchas regiones del mundo. Se llevaron a cabo tres en América del Norte entre 1989 y 1991. Yo era director de vocaciones en ese momento. Como el p. Patricio Keyes, C.Ss.R. y aprendí sobre iniciativas en la pastoral juvenil, independientemente comenzamos nuestro propio discernimiento de trabajar en tal iniciativa. Los archivos incluían cartas de cada uno de nosotros antes de que habláramos juntos.
En 1990, el p. Patricio y yo comenzamos a considerar el establecimiento de una comunidad de jóvenes siguiendo la guía de nuestro Superior General, el Padre. Juan Lasso de la Vega, C.Ss.R. En los archivos había muchas cartas que consideraban directamente la fundación de una comunidad juvenil en Denver. Known as Thibs in our time in the seminary, Fr. Richard Thibodeau, C.Ss.R. was a friend to all of us. He served in ministry as a teacher of seminarians, in ministry at Liguori Publications, as Provincial Consultor, as Provincial, pastor and retreat director. He celebrated fifty years as a Redemptorist. He played an important role in my life as a Redemptorist and as a friend. As many Redemptorists remember him, I wish to tell how his support was essential to the foundation of Casa San Alfonso in 1991. It was our Redemptorist initiative of Casa San Alfonso that introduced me to my ministry with migrants and immigrants.
Recently I asked our Redemptorist archivist for documents about the founding of Casa San Alfonso. I was surprised at the size of the files that he sent me about the CSA initiative. The idea of founding a Redemptorist initiative in youth ministry began with a document from our Superior General in 1988. Various youth encounters took place in many regions of the world. There were three held in North America from 1989 to 1991. I was vocation director at the time. As Fr. Patrick Keyes, C.Ss.R. and I learned about initiatives in youth ministry, we independently began our own discernment of working in such an initiative. The archives included letters from each of us before we talked about it together.
In 1990, Fr. Patrick and I began consideration of establishing a youth community following the guidance of our Superior General, Fr. Juan Lasso de la Vega, C.Ss.R. In the archives there were many letters directly considering the foundation of a youth community in Denver. From the letters many concerns were covered and there were many permissions needed to create Casa San Alfonso. We had considerable encouragement from Rome, but convincing Province leadership to invest personnel in this project was more challenging. We also needed permission from the archbishop of Denver who was very thorough on needing to understand our mission.
As I researched the archives, Fr. Thibodeau’s constructive reviews of the project and his constant support for the project played a crucial role. The Casa San Alfonso initiative was an idealistic venture that received a thorough vetting process, and at times when it could have been stopped, Fr. Dick played a part in keeping the dream alive. Along with Fr. Jim Shea, C.Ss.R., our Provincial at the time, Fr. Dick introduced me to Hispanic Ministry.
When he became our Provincial, Fr. Dick gave support and guidance in developing ministry in the formation of a bilingual mission team (1996-2001) and later initiatives in migrant and immigrant ministry.
