Regresando a México

Estaremos visitando Piedras Negras, Coahuila hoy y mañana. Luego iremos a Juárez y Chihuahua.

Returning to Mexico

I am certain that some of you are wondering about our study of migration in Mexico. On account of commitments of both Fr. Leonardo and I, we were unable to continue visits during the month of August. We have two trips planned beginning today. We will be visiting Piedras Negras, Coahuila today and tomorrow. Then we will go to Juarez and Chihuahua. We will spend the next nine days on these visits. After a week off we will visit Nogales for the second time and Altar, Sonora. This stage of our study will conclude at the end of September. Our provincial governments will indicate what will be the next steps in our Redemptorist mission with migrants.

The challenge ahead will be to identify those who will dedicate themselves to this mission. I was speaking with a good friend who has worked with immigrants and refugees in the United States for many years. His and my experience run parallel in many ways. When speaking about the border, he said that while he is well qualified in Hispanic ministry in the United States, the border is a different reality. He said, “I would have so much to learn to be effective in border ministry.”

I admire his humility and honesty. Walking with people who leave everything behind, no matter the reason, is a lesson in hope, faith and courage. Those who are willing to dedicate themselves to border ministry are heroic. I trust that we will have people willing to dedicate themselves to heroic ministry. Pray for those who take on the challenge to walk with migrants.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
