Estuve enfermo y me visitaste
El cuidado de los enfermos es más que asistencia sanitaria. A menudo, es posible que no podamos hacer nada con respecto a una enfermedad, pero podemos aliviar otras preocupaciones. Una de esas experiencias fue a comprender el deseo de una madre mientras padecía una enfermedad terminal. Esta historia tuvo lugar durante las misiones en The Dalles, Oregon.
Paco
Paco y Rosa me presentaron a sus dos hijos, uno de seis y el otro de siete. Entraban en segundo grado. Los padres explicaron que nacieron con once meses de diferencia. El próximo año de la cosecha de las cerezas, querían que sus hijos recibieran su Primera Comunión. Preguntaron qué debían hacer para preparar a sus hijos antes de venir a Oregón el próximo verano. Fue impresionante escuchar su preocupación. Les dije que debían llevarlos a misa con tanta regularidad como pudieran y enseñarles a contestar las oraciones en la Misa. Les pedí que obtuvieran registros bautismales y les aseguré que ambos podrían recibir su Primera Eucaristía el próximo año.
Paco vino al año siguiente con los chicos, pero me dijo que Rosa tenía cáncer y no podía venir. Le dije que, si quería, podíamos preparar a los niños y enviar una carta con él a su pastor en California para que los niños pudieran recibir su Primera Comunión con su madre presente. Paco dijo que no quería ir a Oregón, pero Rosa insistió en que llevara a los niños para su Primera Comunión. Quería que recibieran la comunión con sus primos en Oregón y podía esperar para recibir la comunión con sus hijos cuando regresaran. Nuestros catequistas me dijeron que los dos niños eran los niños mejor preparados de la clase.
Después de que los niños recibieron su Primera Comunión, Paco me dijo que regresarían a California después de la Misa. Dijo: “Mi esposa se está muriendo, pero podrá tener la comunión con nuestros hijos”. Paco no volvió a The Dalles después de ese verano. Paco consiguió un trabajo de tiempo completo en una granja en California. Sus familiares me dijeron que Rosa murió, pero pudo recibir la comunión con sus hijos durante seis meses.
Si bien es bueno ver a los niños recibir los sacramentos, parte de mi mayor alegría provino de la gratitud de los padres que celebran con gran fe el encuentro de sus hijos con Cristo en los sacramentos.

When I was ill, you cared for me
Care for the ill goes beyond health care. Often, we may be unable to do anything about the illness that one suffers, but we can relieve those who suffer illness of other concerns. One of those experiences took place when understanding a mother’s wish while suffering terminal illness. This story took place during our missions in The Dalles, Oregon.
Paco and Rosa
Paco and Rosa introduced me their two sons, one was six and the other seven. They were entering second grade. The parents explained that they were born eleven months apart. The next year of the cherry harvest, they wanted their children to receive their First Communion. They asked what they should do to prepare their children before they came to Oregon the next summer. It was impressive to hear their concern. I told them that they should take them to Mass as regularly as they can and to teach them to answer the prayers at Mass. I asked them to get baptismal records and assured them that both could receive their First Eucharist the next year.
Paco came the following year with the boys, but he told me that Rosa had cancer and could not come. I told him that if he wanted, we could prepare the boys and send a letter with him to their pastor in California so that the boys could receive their First Communion with their mother present. Paco said that he did not want to go to Oregon, but Rosa insisted that he take the boys for their First Communion. She wanted them to receive communion with their cousins in Oregon, and she could wait to receive communion with her children when they returned. Our catechists told me that the two boys were the best prepared children in the class.
After the children received their First Communion, Paco told me that they were going back to California after the Mass. He said, “My wife is dying, but she will be able to have communion with our boys.” Paco did not come back to The Dalles after that summer. Paco got a full-time job on a farm in California. His relatives told me that Rosa died, but she was able to receive communion with her sons for six months.
While it is good to see the children receiving the sacraments, some of my greatest joy came from the gratitude of parents celebrating their children’s encounter with Christ in the sacraments.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
