Not only called to serve the poor

To Love the Poor

St. Alphonsus went to Scala in 1730 for personal retreat and recuperation. He wanted to serve the “most abandoned”, but he was uncertain about to whom he was particularly called to serve. He went with several companion missionaries and while they planned on making a retreat, they met shepherds who lacked spiritual care. Alphonsus and his companions saw the needs of the poor. They responded as the zealous missionaries that they were. They listened to the people’s stories, they taught the Word of God, they heard confessions and celebrated Masses. They offered their services freely and generously. While each of the missionaries responded to the needs of the poor, the experience affected Alphonsus deeply. His experience went beyond ministering to the poor. He fell in love with the shepherds and the goatherds. How could this nobleman, a highly educated and gifted Neapolitan man leave all that Naples was, to become one with the poor? While he and his fellow missionaries returned to Naples, Alphonsus left his heart in the hills of Scala.

Two years later, the radical decision to found the Redemptorists is well described by his biographer Reh-Mermet:

“For Alphonsus, the city of Naples represented a social and cultural milieu which had considerable prestige: It was his milieu, in which he emerged on a level with the best. The country folk on the other hand made up the world of the economically, culturally, and religiously underdeveloped: the “abandoned” – abandoned simply because they were poor.

Anyone who does not grasp the radical change which Alphonsus decided on at this point cannot possibly understand Alphonsus the founder, Alphonsus the writer, Alphonsus the moralist. The high-class Neapolitan gentleman, the accomplished intellectual, the refined artist, the priest cherished by the elite and the notables, the most renowned of the Illustrissimi in the capital and other major cities of the kingdom, chose at thirty-five years of age, in March 1732, to say good-bye for good to the surroundings of his youth and early manhood.”[1]

Alphonsus began his congregation with five other priests, all well respected. Yet, they were not ready to give themselves entirely to the poor. Soon, the five priests moved on. Brother Vitus, he was not with them on the first day, remained with Alphonsus. It became clear that there was more to becoming a Redemptorist than the desire to help the poor. For St. Alphonsus, it was a matter of seeing Christ in the poor. To fall in love with Christ meant to fall in love with the poor.
