Peregrinación a un Santuario Mexicano
Después de visitar Puerto Vallarta durante mi año sabático en 2007, fui al Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario en Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. Fue durante la Fiesta de Día de Candelaria. Unos 20-30,000 peregrinos estuvieron presentes en la fiesta. Muchos de los peregrinos caminaron hacia el santuario desde más de noventa millas de distancia.
La pompa de la fiesta fue un espectáculo especial para un turista estadounidense. En la fiesta le pregunté a mucha gente sobre el impacto de la migración en México. Una mujer de Tepic, Nayarit, dijo que su hijo se fue hace siete años y que no lo había visto desde entonces. Quería ir a los Estados Unidos a ver a sus nietos, pero no pudo obtener una visa. Con bastante amargura, dijo: “¿Por qué los estadounidenses no nos respetan? Los recibimos regularmente y con amabilidad aquí”. Trabajó en la industria turística.
Una mujer de Colima dijo que los que van al norte y regresan de visita regresan cambiados. Algunos regresan como protestantes, algunos son muy materialistas y son extraños para la familia. Añadió: “Hablan más y escuchan menos”.
Caminando con los peregrinos
Después de pasar cuatro días con los peregrinos en Talpa, quería volver como peregrino. Padre Carlos me invitó a peragrinar con su grupo desde Tepic al año siguiente. Por mucho que disfruté participar en la fiesta durante mi año sabático, fue mucho más impresionante pasar seis días caminando casi 100 millas desde Coastecomate hasta Talpa, y luego pasar cuatro días en Talpa para el festival. El rector del santuario me pidió que fuera capellán de tres grupos que no tenían sacerdote con ellos. Celebré tres Misas cada día y cada grupo insistió en que comiera con ellos. Cada grupo me tomó como miembro de su grupo. Fue una experiencia tan bonita que he vuelto a peregrinar tres veces más. Planeaba hacer la peregrinación en 2021, pero las peregrinaciones han sido canceladas durante los últimos dos años. Espero con ansias que las peregrinaciones comiencen de nuevo.

After visiting Puerto Vallarta during my sabbatical in 2007, I went to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. It was during the Fiesta for the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, or better known as Día de Candelaria. Some 20-30,000 pilgrims were present for the feast of the Presentation of Jesus on February 2. Many of the pilgrims walk to the shrine from more than ninety miles away.
The pageantry of the fiesta was a special sight for an American tourist. At the fiesta, I asked many people about the impact of migration on Mexico. One woman from Tepic, Nayarit said her son left seven years ago and she had not seen him since. She wanted to go to the U.S. to see her grandchildren, but could not get a visa. Rather bitterly she said, “Why don’t Americans respect us? We receive them regularly and graciously here.” She worked in the resort industry.
A woman from Colima said that those who go north and come back for visits come back changed. Some come back as Protestants, some are very materialistic, and they are strangers to the family. She added, “They talk more and listen less.”
Walking with the pilgrims
After spending four days with the pilgrims in Talpa, I wanted to return as a pilgrim. Fr. Carlos invited me to come with his group from Tepic the following year. As much as I enjoyed participating in the fiesta during my sabbatical, it was much more impressive spending six days walking nearly 100 miles from Coastecomate to Talpa, then spending four days in Talpa for the festival. The rector of the shrine asked me to be chaplain for a few groups who had no priest with them. I said three Masses each day and each group insisted that I eat with them. Each group took me in as a member of their group. It was such a beautiful experience that I have returned to make the pilgrimage three more times. I planned to make the pilgrimage in 2021, but the pilgrimages have been canceled for the past two years. I look forward to when the pilgrimages begin again.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
