Padre Migrante: “You are not like…” – “No eres como …”
“No eres como …”
A veces, recibo el comentario extraño: “No eres como otros sacerdotes que he conocido”. Es difícil responder a ese tipo de comentarios. Suele ser un complemento, pero me hace preguntarme qué espera realmente la gente de un sacerdote. El comentario puede llegar cuando asista a un evento deportivo para jóvenes donde trabajo. Viene cuando la gente dice: “Te vi caminar”. Con más edad, mi ejercicio a menudo consiste en dar largos paseos y hacerlo en pueblos pequeños. Se nota la gente.
A veces ha sido difícil mantener la alegría del ministerio con algunas de las expectativas de los sacerdotes de hoy. El gozo del ministerio para mí siempre ha sido estar disponible para las personas en tiempos de problemas y crisis. Los momentos más difíciles vienen con mensajes de “deberes” y “tiene que”. La exhortación apostólica del Papa Francisco, La alegría del Evangelio, y muchos de sus mensajes y entrevistas me dan esperanza. Su papado renueva muchas de las aspiraciones de servir a los pobres y marginados que me motivaron a convertirme en misionero redentorista. Cuando estaba en el seminario, era un momento cuando estaba bien cuestionar, explorar y descubrir el mensaje de Jesús. Fue vivificante. Me entristecen aquellos que no reconocen el mensaje de la Iglesia como “Buenas Nuevas”.
En este momento de recuperarse de una pandemia y ver la desesperación en muchas partes del mundo, es difícil experimentar la alegría. Quizás, necesitamos aprender de aquellos que más han sufrido. A menudo entre los pobres hay más alegría y ciertamente más fe que en muchas personas con más recursos. Los pobres a menudo sienten más gratitud por lo poco que tienen que los ricos por lo mucho que tienen.
Que la alegría del Evangelio ilumine tu camino.

“You are not like…”
Sometimes, I get the strange comment, “You are not like other priests that I have met.” It is hard to respond to that type of comment. It is usually meant as a complement, but it makes me wonder what people really expect of a priest. The comment may come when I attend a sports event for youth where I work. It comes when people say, “I saw you walking.” As I have gotten older, my exercise often is to take long walks and doing so around small towns, people tend to notice.
At times it has been difficult to maintain the joy of ministry with some of the expectations of priests today. The joy of ministry for me has always been in being available to people in times of trouble and crisis. The most difficult times come with messages of “you should” and “you must”. Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, and many of his messages and interviews give me hope. His papacy renews many of the aspirations for serving the poor and marginalized that motived me to become a Redemptorist missionary. When I was in the seminary, it was a time when it was okay to question, to explore and to discover the message of Jesus. It was life giving. I am saddened by those who fail to recognize the Church’s message as “Good News.”
It this time of recovering from a pandemic and seeing desperation in many parts of the world, many find it difficult to experience joy. Perhaps, we need to learn from those who have suffered the most. Often amongst the poor, there is more joy and certainly more faith than in many people with more resources. The poor often have more gratitude for the little that they have, than rich people have for the much that they have.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
