Padre Migrante en Apostolado Hispano en Baton Rouge
Estoy trabajando ahora con la oficina del Ministerio Hispano (Apostolado Hispano) de la Diócesis de Baton Rouge. Mi trabajo aquí es temporal, ya que en abril llegará un nuevo capellán para el Apostolado. Después de Pascua, comenzaré a servir con la Red Católica Migrante Campesino. Hasta entonces, estaré ofreciendo varios talleres. La primera son dos sesiones para catequistas. Ofreceré con el P. Emilio talleres para Sacristanes, Servidores, Ujieres y Ministros Eucarísticos. También tendremos un taller para Lectores. También ofreceré una conferencia para parejas que se preparan para el matrimonio. Todo esto está fuera de nuestros momentos especiales para celebrar la Cuaresma y la Semana Santa.
Algunos me pueden considerar como el “viejo” contando historias sobre el Apostolado Hispano. Lo que puedo ofrecer a los muchos voluntarios y líderes de la comunidad hispana es experiencia y perspectiva de nuestro ministerio. Una de las grandes bendiciones del Ministerio Hispano aquí es la juventud del liderazgo en la comunidad. La mayoría de los líderes activos en la liturgia, la música, la educación religiosa, los movimientos eclesiales laicos y los servicios sociales tienen menos de cincuenta años, y la mayoría son mucho más joven. Son muy comprometidos y generosos con su tiempo al servicio de la Iglesia.
Lo que realmente ofrezco a estos jóvenes líderes es experiencia. Incluye buena experiencia de algunas actividades y programas bien dirigidos en la iglesia. También incluye experiencias que comenzaron con buena voluntad e intención, pero sirven más como advertencias sobre errores en el camino que como grandes éxitos.
Una de las lecciones clave que espero transmitir a los voluntarios entusiastas es que “hay muchas maneras de evangelizar a los pobres. No es necesario usar las todas”. Los Apóstoles enviaron a Pablo y Bernabé en su misión apostólica con una carta de los Apóstoles que decía: “No deseamos imponerles cargas más allá de lo necesario”. (Hechos 15: 28)

I am working now with the office of Hispanic Ministry (Apostolado Hispano) for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. My work here is temporary, as a new chaplain for the Apostolado will arrive in April. After Easter, I will begin ministry with the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Ministry. Until then, I will be offering several workshops. The first is two sessions for catechists. I will offer with Fr. Emilio a workshop for Sacristans, Servers, Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers. We will also have a workshop for Lectors. I will also offer a conference for couples preparing for marriage. All of this is outside of our special moments for celebrating Lent and Holy Week.
Some may consider me as the “old man” telling stories about the Hispanic Apostolate. What I can offer to the many volunteers and Hispanic community leaders is experience and perspective on our ministry. One of the great blessings of Hispanic Ministry here is the youth of the leadership in the community. Most of the active leaders in liturgy, music, religious education, the lay ecclesial movements and social services are under fifty years old, and most are much younger. They are very committed and generous with their time in service of the Church.
What I truly offer to these young leaders is experience. It includes good experience of some well-run activities and programs in the church. It also includes experiences that began with good will and intention, but serve more as warnings about mistakes on the journey, rather than great successes.
One of the key lessons that I hope to pass on to enthusiastic volunteers is that “there are many ways to evangelize the poor. You do not have to use them all.” The Apostles sent Paul and Barnabas on their apostolic mission with a letter from the Apostles saying, “We wish to place no burdens on you beyond what is necessary.” (Acts 15: 28)

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
