¿Abierto a nuevos métodos?
Nuestros seminarios estaban llenos.

Open to new ways?
As a young man, studying to become a priest, the news coming from Rome about the Second Vatican Council was exciting. The news was hopeful. It generated enthusiasm for the mission of the Church. We had no fear of the Scriptures, the development of doctrine and letting moral values challenge the darker sides of human life. The movement of the Spirit in the Church was for a greater good and for the evangelization of all people. We entered debate on issues of faith, morality, war, social justice and concern for the poor of the world. We were idealistic and amazed at developments in science, medicine, communication and struggles around the world for independence and justice.
Our seminaries were full. Many missionaries went from the United States and other developed nations to proclaim the Catholic faith is regions of the world that never heard of Jesus before and where faith communities began to grow in some of the poorer and war-ravaged people received the missionaries.
Fifty years after my ordination, I ask what happened to that spirit of confidence in the faith and desire to serve in our Church today. Our Church in the United States is different from the Church of the 1960’s when I entered the seminary. Many churches lack the presence of children and youth. We have lower attendance at Masses and many of our parishes are simply aging communities. Where there are young people in our churches, they are in immigrant communities. Our clergy are aging, and many are replaced by foreign priests.
We need new ways of expressing, teaching and witnessing to the faith. We need to be communities of respect, love, joy and hope. The early Church attracted people as others said, “See how they love one another.” Our discussions of faith need to focus on why we follow Jesus, and to invite people to the new life that we witness in our faith. No one approaches the faith because of rules, laws and obligations. They approach the Church because they see love in the Church community.
Our values and faith do not change, but they need to be expressed in joy filled ways. Let us be creative in showing the love of God in our lives.
